Gently, Touki shook his head. "I've heard monks say that things that happen through no fault of ours are just our fault in a previous life." A noticeable grimace. "Kharma. It is a difficult concept." In more than one way.

"Everything in life comes in portions. It would be tremendous ill-fortune to receive a whole allotment at once."
At the monks, Sugimoto shrugs
"I'm no monk, maybe I will understand when I retire? For now I say that our previous life places us on the wheel and returns as here in a new one. If everything we did was dependent on a previous life, then every single life would be a ghostly afterimage of our 1st life."

Touki frowned, considering. "That makes sense, sir. So perhaps we can make choices, but the blows that are dealt to us by fate are the result of a previous life?"

Placing another stone, he chuckled without humor. "When you become a monk, will you write to me and let me know the answer?"

Touki chuckled softly, and a bit less rumbly. "I look forward to it, Ikoma-sama."

He placed another stone. "Now. Put me out of my misery. I only have a handful of stones left, and I think it is not enough to improve my position."

Touki accepted them with both hands and a bow. There was no sense in doing the game of refusals; homework was very much not a gift.

"I have found that many things are often made better by a busy mind, it's true." Touki nodded.

He paused then, looking at Sugimoto. "Sir... your son, Ikoma Tanaka-san." Touki hesitated a moment, and then went on. "Does he still perform his duties? Actively, I mean."

Touki gave a neutral nod. "At first... yes. But as you said, a busy mind is a healthy mind." He looked down at the board, his expression not changing. "I spend most of my days with my mind quite busy indeed."

He did not look up to meet his superior's gaze.

He straightened. "Thank you again for the game, sir. And the lessons." He held up the scrolls. "And the reading. Perhaps next week, I shall stand a better chance."

Actually, it was funny, but he did feel better. He always did after these games.
