[D11 EA] Red Wedding: A Play in Four Acts

A stage was improvised in the court, improvised props visible in the center area, one representing obviously a castle, while the other accessories were more in the background.

Shosuro Sara was dressed elegantly, though in white, elegant in her peacock mask as she stood in the middle of the stage while awaiting her audience.

"Arigatou for gracing us with your time, Minna-sama. In these trying times, theatre may seem frivolous, but we must not forget, we are one Empire, one people, under the Heavens. We have our differences, and will always have it, but must transcend it together." She seemed invigorated. "That is what this play is meant to symbolize, as its original author would have liked it. Red Wedding is a play based on the vision and experiences of Asako Kashiwagi-sama, and I merely refined his genius. I wish you all enjoy his work and the work of our actors, and will pray for his safe journey to Yomi."

As she stood to the side, some of actors seemed to line up for their first scene.

Pace Yourself: There will be four scenes which I will be posting with time inbetween for people to react, this will be the whole of the play, this will be the summary of the scenes as necessary. Actors may post responses/additional comments to add more detail to what they are doing during the recent scenes, if they'd wish. The first scene will follow a few hours later, so people can post joining in, but later feel free to post "I have been here all way along", so people can post and join any time.

A certain dream-like quality: Master Dream has done some edits to the play, so all audience members must succeed on a Willpower versus TN 15 or gain the Sleeper Agent disadvantage (Enemies of the Empire, p. 49) for no points.

Akemi would not miss this play for the world. A break from the siege was welcome. She sat closer to the back as was expected, but thankfully she was able to see the full performance.

Any other hints in the performance went straight over the little airheads head.

The Shakanar, it seems, was fully into this. He was wielding a spear that many would recognize. The Jade Spear was in his hands as he made grand gestures, playing his part to the hilt, in stage armor of gilt gold, working his tail into scenes and postures, using the extra height it gave him to its fullest to pose as a proud, powerful champion of his lord.

Iko had worked hard on the score for this performance and was not going to miss the first public showing of the play.

She took a seat and looked around as the other seats began to fill. Dressed up in her finest outfit, she looked quite proud and pleased and hoped for a big crowd to appreciate the work everyone had put into it.

D11 EA play willpower roll with void. TN15: 3d10o10k3 15

Was this going to be some good stories? About a great hero, well as long as there was some fighting and action the Moto would be satisfied. He took a place near the other Moto and crossed his arms across his chest.

He would reserve judgment on this ‘play’ until he had seen it all.

Any nuance in the play went right over his head, or maybe he just didn’t care about deeper meanings. Poetry and flowery things were superfluous to him, he liked things simple and to the point.

Yukarin was taking part and there was little else to uplift spirits of late. With the siege being quiet today Maiya had absolutely turned up to enjoy the play. She'd even left her armour back in her room.

She was excited to see a few others she knew taking part. A naga, the pretty Seppun, the respected fighter Touki...

Taking a seat she would listen quietly with an enthusiastic expression. She'd not been to a proper play before!

Horonigai is at the backstage fully dressed up as her character, that, well, was very similar to herself. Makeup impeccable, junitihoe with all the twelve layers properly straightened, and a surprise underneath, planned for later.

The Imperial princess adjusts her hair and asks whomever was there in the backstage about her looks, "Is this ok –– what do you think?"

Touki was kneeling off to the side of the stage, visible but unobtrusive. It was a good spot, where he wouldn't obscure the action, but his flute playing would be easily heard. He played a few notes now, the tone clear and pure, soft, and yet still audible over the rumbling of the audience.

The expression Touki wore was bordering on cheerful as he waited for the play to begin.

Suzume Chihaya settled into the audience, a little further back than her status warranted, but she was never one to put on airs.

Also being out of ballistic fan range seemed a good idea, after the last performance she had watched.

Any attempts to alter her mind slipped past without taking root, her ability to relax being too compromised by the nagging awareness of the siege, and the constant state of readiness it imposed on her.

This is going to go well, he thinks, as something begins to settle into place in his mind that he cannot well perceive.

"Eto... you have a few strands loose along the top that need to be tightened up."

Degarashi did not look at all like Degarashi, dressed as he was in a bulky, ill fitting robe that permitted him to store the large number of streamers and other 'spells' he'd be using during the show.

His voice was also perpetually deeper and raspier, as if he refused to drop character until the play was complete.

Yukarin was ready to pour all her emotions into her role. For the moment though, she waited for things to start, almost meditating as she caught her breath from getting here in a hurry by focusing on the very act.

After Sara stepped back, she gave the subtle signals to the crew for the first scene.

Soft flute and shamisen music floated in the air while a pair of actors joined on the stage.

The Heroine spoke with her Lord, the Tortoise actor making his few lines work well, animated about his upcoming wedding, where the Heroine would of course take a spot of honor. Just as they were discussing procuring sake and kumis for the festivities another figure entered the scene, draped in shadows in bulky clothing and a mean demeanor. The Warlock, advisor to the Lord, publicly agreed with the pair, while making snide remarks. After the Heroine leaves to take a walk in the garden to prepare herself and the Lord left to being preparations, the Warlock let the crowd know of his nefarious plans...

My armorer friend continues to impress, thinks Seitouna as the play proceeds.

It might be noticed that, at a couple of points, he turns his head slightly sideways, as if straining to hear something, or as if a bug were buzzing about him.

Batzurig followed along, there was a lot of talking so far but that was just how these proper samurai did things… talk and more talk… and wait yes more talking.

He said to Akemi in gruff whisper, “Give me a dead goat and we can make this a lively party, what say you?”

She winces and puts both hands on her hair, desperately looking for a mirror nearby. Then she stops, and looks back at the man in robes with a quirked eyebrow as he rises to stage.

"Arigatou gozaimashita... eto... Warurock-san." She tells herelf, not knowing he the man was, initially.

Degarashi steps forward towards the audience, raising a finger to his lips. As if employing some fell magic around him, the music fades slightly, undercut by a deeper, more sinister melody.

He lets out a cackle, deep and sonorous, and his words drip with poison as they flow out into the audience.

"My lord prepares a feast, a feast of celebration, to honor the love he shares with [the betrothed]. He seeks to beseech the fortunes to bless this union, and as his spiritual advisor, beseech them I shall." He cackles from within his robe. "Ah, but love is a game of fools, and the fortunes numerous and powerful. Beseech them I shall..." A hand reached out from within his robes, fingers stretched and claw-like, palm held out towards Horonigai. "And then you will learn, oh child... You will learn the true powers, the true temptations..." The outstretched hand made a sinister caressing motion, before closing and returning to its sleeve. "I will show you the truth of this world, in all its terrible glory."

As the music swelled back into its normal tones, the warlock returned to his place beside his lord, standing perhaps uncomfortably close to the betrothed...
