She re-focused to the task at hand. "... Shall we get started? We'll gather material, and grab what can't be used for construction as tinder for some fires."

The Isawa nodded. "We'll gather as much as we can. And, maybe we'll find other ways to help them."

Mai thought elsewhere, hearing of the dead, and took a step back from the conversation and focused inward for a time. However, given a bit of walking, she'd returned to the front and said, "that we might help those in need, best we start working quickly, neh?"

"That mystery shouldn't be left to lie, I think. Tsukimi-san, does Matsu-sama plan to look for its cause?"

Myo-en leads the little group to an area of scrubby trees and brush growing not too far from the walls, where they can cut some poles and evergreen branches to construct a makeshift shelter (or shelters) for the refugees. The same snow that makes conditions so bad for the poor souls stuck out in the open will make it easy to drag their building supplies toward the gates, at least--and they can pile snow around the outside of the brush walls for extra insulation once the structure is built.

As they go along, Myo-en keeps an eye out for any edible forage that might be found out here in late winter, the year's hungriest season. There's no way the whole lot of hungry refugees can be fed on wild herbs and roots, but as a lifelong vegetarian from the far northern mountains, she's adept at spotting whatever handfuls of famine foods might be hiding amongst the brush and weeds.

Any of us especially awesome at building those structures? Myo-en is just 3k3 (but can spend void, Ki-rin tattoo, etc. to pump that up a bit). It seems like the sort of thing that could be a cooperative roll if more than one person has the skill (Craft: Woodworking or Craft: Carpentry).

We might also be able to get some of the refugees to help once we start dragging in our building materials...

Once they reached a good place for foraging, Miwako lit her lantern and began gathering what materials she could.

Osamu watched the four women until they were out of sight, then glanced towards the rope ladder. The wise thing to do would be to roll it up, then wait for the women to arrive back before dropping it down again. Though he decided aganist it. If they ran into trouble out there and had to return in a hurry, it might waste precious seconds to throw it down.

Shaking his head he took a brief look around before speaking quietly to himself. "What odds do you give it that they all return? Fifty, fifty or worse?" Tonight, I might give it sixty, forty. The people out there are desperate, but probably not pushed to the point of breaking. If this weathers holds though? Well, a person will eat about anything if they are hungry enough."

Concentrate... breathe like fire... Tsukimi thought through the cold of the night. Her teeth felt like chittering, almost disrupting her concentration, but she managed to awaken the fire in her spirit - her mind ablaze as well as her soul.

"I believe Matsu Tani as the Lion responsible for the scouting mission have reported the findings. Perhaps there will be a strike force prepared for it tomorrow." She understood why the Lion didn't want to risk the scouting-force consisting on mostly volunteers earlier.

With her mind awakened to greater heights, Tsukimi began to take lead on working with the materials they had gathered so far.

On the interior side of the wall, a snakeman looks dubiously at the stairs.

"Good evening, samurai-samas?" he speaks in a moderate tone, trying to determine if anyone is up on the wall who might relay visual recon of the poor crowd outside.

"That would be wise, I think. Though I hope whatever it is won't trouble these people tonight. A wild animal would stay away from such a crowd." Of course, what Tsukimi had described might not be the work of a wild animal. But if they were lucky, it still might avoid being so badly outnumbered.

Myo-en helps the others work on the shelters with stolid patience. When she stops moving she quickly begins to shiver, which gives an extra incentive to keep dragging and stacking brush at a brisk pace.

As she works, she keeps an eye out for any refugees who are in especially serious distress. There's not a lot she'd be able to do for such people, but maybe....

On few occassions as they work, Tsukimi pauses to warm her hands over her mouth, the warm embers of the dragon within her providing a gentle warmth.

"I have some medicine and first aid items... but it's not much. Perhaps we could try to tend to those in most dire need of help?"

"Empty fields for the most part." Osamu offered in reply. "I think most of those who have camped outside are closer to the gate."

He didn't feel a need to mention the handful of samurai who had descended the rope ladder. He had lost sight of them regardless. "I'm Osamu by the way."

Comforted, the Hilsilage turns his mind to other matters.

"Do you enjoy looking at the empty fields?"

Myo-en nods, then, realizing this might be hard to see behind a large armful of greenery, clears her throat. "Yes. We're too few to help everyone, but many will survive the night well enough without us..."

...though it certainly won't be fun, and Myo-en feels that her gratitude for the hard but sheltered bed awaiting her in the temple tonight probably indicates her mastery of Correct Effort is not as advanced as it ought to be. She refocuses on the problem before them.

"Hai," she says, with a quick nod before dutifully seeking out those who would know better and listening to the whispers of Void for any insight she might be able to glean. Though for most, from what Void told her, she merely knew they were troubled souls and she needed no great power from an ancient art to tell her this much.

"At this point in time empty fields are something of a blessing. It means we don't have a army camped outside our doors." Osamu mused moving his gaze towards the ladder. No one seemed to be trying to climb it, so that waa good.

"But to answer your question. Somewhat? It's the closest I get to the wide open expanse of the Ocean."

The Hilsilage begins to sweep snow from the lowest steps with his tail, content to be slightly useful.

"Does your name have something to do with that? Helping others that is." He clarified. "I met the Saravaya yesterday and she said her name meant she was some sort of scout."

Or at least that's what he had taken from the conversation.
