So if it is the case that there are unmarried members of the crew that it would be advantageous to have wedded, the master can order it so. And it does happen, from time to time, though it is rare."

He shrugs somewhat.

"It is not often advisable to wed those who crew together. Makes for more closed relationships than is helpful, commonly."

Chinatsu nodded at that logic and slowly sank under the water briefly, driving her head before coming back up, only her head bobbed above the water now. "Hai, the Lion tend to put family members in different units, for various reasons."

She smirked then. "So no sailing maiden swept you off your feet while you were at sea then?"

Seitouna chuckles a bit.

"A gentleman never tells, Matsu-san. But whatever dalliances may have been would have been only that, and nothing else."

He sighs.

"No, when my lords decide the time is right, I will be wedded, and I will likely be stationed in or near a port on a longer-term basis then."

Chinatsu nodded in solidarity at the idea of dalliances being just that, then gave the Kasuga a critical eye, trying to estimate his age. "Just your lord decides? By the time my sister was your age my family had already put forward half a dozen potential suitors."

"If she is half the woman you are, I can understand why so many would be so eager. But I am kin to the kizoku, if a bit distant, so the one is the same as the other for me. And," and he gives a chuckle, "I am not exactly the sort that finds himself in high demand."

Chinatsu stared at Seitouna for a moment, as though attempting to determine if he was actually being serious or trying to be funny. Either way she didn't seem amused as she slid up out of the water again, her stub of a right arm coming fully out of the water. Her stare had grown cold.

"No, Kasuga-sama. I am afraid you are quite incorrect on your assessment of me."

She let her silence grow long enough to get awkward before continuing.

"I wish you luck in your kizoku's choice for your bride."

Well, that went sideways, he thinks. But Matsu are Matsu, after all.And his eyes flicker to the motion of her arm for only a moment before he looks just slightly away enough from her to "not notice" any other details.

What he says, however, is "Thank you, Matsu-san. Your well-wishing is appreciated."

Chinatsu stared at him for a moment longer before nodding to herself and sinking back down into the water. She was seemingly happier that they had an understanding now.

"So I don't think you ever said, how long were you at sea, before this?" She dutifully changed the topic.

"Not long enough to become truly adept at sea-craft, Matsu-san, though enough to pick up at least the rudiments." He shrugs again. "Knotwork can be practiced ashore easily enough, but rigging sails requires sails to rig, and there are not so many of those off of the water."

A bit of a smile to show the levity of the comment.

Chinatsu nodded at that information. "I've little knowledge of such matters, having really only ever seen river-craft, and they mostly use barge poles or..." She paused, realizing she didn't really know the name of the other means of conveyance. "Rudder paddles." She finally finishes lamely.

"I am told that the craft that ply the greater lakes also rig sails, though they also work from oars and rowers' strong backs.

"And it is no small task, rowing. Excellent exercise all around, really."

Chinatsu raised an eyebrow at the notion of a samurai rowing like a peasant, but what could you expect from a Tortoise.

"I couldn't speak much on the larger lakes, though I suppose there's enough space on the water to make a sail work well."

He lapses into quiet.

Chinatsu seemed content to let the silence continue for awhile as she soaked.

Finally she added, "It's a shame that we didn't retain some of the Phoenix who kept the water from stinking. The perfumes can only do so much."

"True," Seitouna agrees readily. He also adds "But it is at least an honest smell. not ideal but far from the worst."

Some of the Merenae cities are, wow, he thinks. But he also thinks it is wisest to say nothing of such to a Matsu.

Chinatsu shrugged at that. "Not that honest, as it's being covered up." She paused then. "But perhaps I've spent too long at court."

"I'd not venture to say. Though there are perfumes and perfumes, to be certain, and this one is more pleasant than many I've encountered. You wouldn't happen to know which it is, would you?"

Chinatsu shook her head at that. "No, apologies. I never thought to ask. There may be a worker here who would be happy to answer your question though."

Seitouna nods.

"I shall have to look into that then, thank you."

He flexes his fingers, notices them.

"Ah, but I begin to take on too much water; you will excuse me, Matsu-san, I pray. An appointment with a magistrate approaches, and I would hate to disappoint."

He offers a short bow and makes to heave himself out of the pool.

"Hai, agreed. I should get out before the smell begins to stick to my skin, it takes forever to get out then." Chinatsu replied, then smirked a little remembering his discomfort with her nudity.

"I will wait until you are gone though, Kasuga-sama. Fortunes guide you."
