"Some of the new arrivals began reviewing our next course of action last night, and I had heard that plans for the defense would be presented. I had entreated you yesterday about forming a scouting group. If my plans to join the scouts had run into the gates being closed early, or somehow risked our position by giving away where a fortification had been set...well, there was no reason to prevent the left hand from knowing that the right was doing."

"It also would help to hear if there had been any settled plans for defending an assault so I would not be caught off guard."

The governor nods once when she finishes speaking. "It is wise to stay informed. I had merely wanted to know what brought you with the archer if you were to remain so quiet. I had a positive impression of your passion yesterday, but today it seemed more dulled until I pushed for you to speak."

He shrugs with one shoulder. "It is no matter. I, also, merely wanted to stay informed."

"I..." Erina pauses. "I am increasingly wary of my own relative lack of status. There are more of our clan who have more clout, more...experienced tactical educations. The Matsu are, well, less known for preparation and planning. But...I do repeat my caveat: plans that are built on precise triggers often have a weakness. They rely on the enemy doing everything that we expect."

"But you already have given me what I asked for." Erina can hear the pitch of her voice rising. "A scouting force, I truly believe can give warning before disaster strikes. And facing an enemy assembled from our ancestors have to know our tricks as well as we do. But you have already been gracious and given me to tools. It is hard to ask more, when I have the chance to prove the merit with my own two hands."

The governor smiles softly.

"Be well, Matsu-san. Do not second guess yourself this much when you're scouting later." They are gentle words, though they still might sting.

Erina nods. "I am better suited for that battlefield than the other one behind the walls Skimizu-dono." She bows, waiting to be excused, graciously taking the mild rebuke.
