He shook his head, but didn't voice any disagreement. It seemed to him she was ignoring her own advice and the warning of the city governor. Though she held rank among the Lion here, he wasn't going to argue.

Instead he rubbed his hands, then warmed his arms in his sleeves.

"I'll keep watch in the rear, in the case our vigorous friend reveals themselves. Don't count on it being easily chased off if it does."

With the news of the Crane Champion on her mind, Tsukimi looked closer at the gruesome scene before them and the poor victim. Did they perhaps have any clue of what clan or family they belonged to?

If it's a Doji, it might be someone who was part of the retinue..

The scraps of fabric on the kimono mark them as a samurai of the Phoenix, though there is no sign of a family mon.

Baatar puzzled over the peculiar tracks but is unable to make head or tail of them.

"What kind of crazy animal could've done such a thing?" he wondered. "Do you have crocodiles in East Lionstan? I would've thought it too cold...."

"I... don't know what Lionstan is." Tani blinked. "Come on. Whatever that creature is, I don't think it's a problem for today." She turned the horse back towards the city. "Let's get going. If the Crane Champion is still around the city, we should find him before the gates close."

It ruled out the possibility of a member of a Crane Champion's retinue.

As Tani decided it was time to return, Tsukimi trusted the Matsu nikutai's decision. The Lioness was the more experienced of them when it came to this, after all.

The Moto nodded and turned his horse back as well.

"Any thoughts on where this Crane lord might be?" Baatar asked. "If the some of the refugees saw him get wounded, maybe we could follow their trail back."

Norikami moved along with the rest, still keeping watch. If they came across living refugees, he would ask if they heard tell of survivors that were wounded or being hunted by the enemy.

"Alright. Let's fan out and see if the refugees have any information about the Crane Clan Champion." Now back near the refugees, Tani began asking around, being surprisingly calm as she tries to collect useful information to the Crane Champion's fate.

"Yes, Matsu-sama," Tsukimi nodded. Asking around seemed prudent... as she herself was concerned that the rumor of a Crane Champion missing was perhaps a trap. She didn't doubt the Lion who had recieved the word, but she doubted those who had given it... if the enemy was capable of such subterfuge.

So she asked around, trying to glean out who among the refugees would be more likely to know.

Baatar nodded, and spurred his horse to meet some of the newer arrivals.

"You! Hey, you!" he called to the refugees. "You seen any Crane bushi on the way here? Guys in blue with swords? Anyone?"

But Baatar was met with little luck at first. Often he found he was giving the refugees more info than they gave in return, as he pointed the cold, exhausted people towards the city gates.

Day 2 early afternoon, investigate missing Crane PER/Investigation unknown TN: 4d10o10k3 18

The group returns to the city and the horde of refugees pressing through its gates. There are rumors of the Crane Champion - that he stayed behind to fight the Steel Chrysanthemum in a duel, that he had been killed during the initial assault, that he was working with the returned Emperor in order to kill the Hantei as Doji Masato had attempted to do a few years earlier, that he had organized the Crab to lead a counter-assault on the spirits... every person they talk to seems to have heard a different version of the story.

"These people know less than nothing," Baatar reported back to Tani, sounding disgusted after having held a series of lengthy but ultimately fruitless interviews. "The only thing they seem to agree on is that the Crane lord isn't here."

"No luck for me either, minna-sama. Given the chaos of the situation, it might be difficult to learn anything for certain - but it does seem that the Crane Champion was at Morikage Toshi, and he is not here now."
