Moto Baatar cracked an eye open and pushed the aggressively licky dog aside.

"Oh! So you aren't the kenku after all?" he asked. "I had thought maybe you were here to teach our brave Phoenix your kenkujutsu!"

Somgai turns to him. "I know! Hopes dashed!"

He turns back to Iko with a startled look. "...but this is even better, Togashi-sama. Of course."

He bows again.

"I am Isawa Somgai."

"Kenku?" Iko asked curious at Bataar's comment. "No I am not, Unicorn-san." She admitted, referring to Bataar only by Clan, unfamiliar as she was with their heraldry.

"I did however have the honor of training with one for a few years." She added as the penny seemingly dropped for Somgai as to who she was.

"Do you know the name of the one you seek? My master went by the name of Shune. At least that was his name in our tongue."

Baatar clambered to his feet, dusted himself off, then returned his sword to its sheath.

"You trained with a kenku?" he asked, incredulous. "Why, that's almost the same thing as being one, isn't it? Can you teach us some kenkujutsu?"

Iko looked the two samurai over, and decided to indulge both them and herself at once.

"You do understand that these are sacred secret techniques, taught to very, very few. If the Kenku you seek arrives and learns that you have been taught already, he may refuse to take on another teacher's hand me downs."

"That.... sounds just like what a kenku would say," the young Unicorn said thoughtfully, giving a hard look at the feathers dangling from Iko's saya before exchanging glances with Isawa Somgai.

"Nevertheless, we are ready!"

"I can't teach you any ancient sword techniques of the greatest of the five ancient races, but I can impart some wisdom and give you some exercises to practice to prepare you for the opportunity to learn should it present itself."

Iko slowly walks around the pair of eager samurai and smiles.

"The Kenku way is predicated on speed above all else. Speed of action, speed of thought and speed of attack. Sort of a strike first, strike last approach to combat. It is said that a Kenku taught the great Kakita and that is how he was fast enough to defeat Lady Matsu in their duel."

"I'm pretty fast..." he looks to Baatar and smiles.

"Speed," Baatar nodded in understanding. "I'm speedy too. But do you mean we should train for more speed? How should we do that?"

"Let's race! And if we can beat Togashi-sama, who was trained by a kenku, clearly we're fast enough!"

His eyes positively SHINE with excitement and... a spark of mischief?

"A foot race? You do know that Kenku normally fly if they need haste?" She enquires gently before breaking into a smile.

"But in this cold air, it might prove invigorating as well. Let's do it." Iko agrees as she finds a small bench upon which to lay her possessions. There were still a few hours before court, so she figured there was plenty of time to prepare herself afterwards.

"All right," Baatar agreed gamely, setting down his own gear on another bench. "Shall we race to the far end of the garden, and back?"

Iko starts to limber up and nods her head at Baatar's suggestion.

[I'm not a mechanics person, but this isn't important so sure, Athletics/Water sounds good. TN 5 just to be able to run to the end and back. Call Raises to look cool doing it, but highest roll wins.]

Somgai warms up with some quick stretches.

When the race begins, he takes off like lightning.

If he gets ahead of others, he slows to make sure he doesn't win by too much.

All the while he's running, he's doing great leaps and laughing, having all the fun in the world.

Iko takes after the Phoenix, but it is obvious this isn't her forte.

She attempts to hurdle some obstacles but they just end up slowing her down further. Grateful that Somgai doesn't increase his lead farther than he obviously could, she is enjoying the spirited competition.

The young Moto leaped into action, racing nimbly through the snow towards the far edge of the garden. A burst of speed allowed him to overtake Iko; but though Baatar closed the distance somewhat, he wasn't quite able to catch up with Somgai.

Somgai sloppily makes the turn to get back to their starting point, giving the others a chance to meet up with him.

As they near the finish line, Somgai lets out a bit of a howl of part fun and part exertion.

Elsewhere in the garden, Norikami had recently divested himself of Aya, who had gone to see to their rooms in the castle. He on the other hand had other concerns.

He walked through the cleared paths in the garden at first, and he heard some incredible amount of racket. Shouting, cheery voices, learning ultimate fighting techniques from a kenku and eventually foot races.

Must be some kids and their mother, trying to enjoy this last moment of peace before everything goes to shit.

He lit his pipe and wondered how the locals would react to all these refugees. The honorable thing is welcome them, obviously...but eventually crime shoots up (due to locals causing a scene, it's rarely the refugees) and food shoots down...that's everyone's issue.

He blew out smoke into the mourning air.

"Peasants are always forgotten first, wonder how loyal they are here", he mused to the cold.
