Seeing the Phoenix was clearly ill, Tsukimi offered him her clothed arm rather than the bared one with tattoos, in case he needed extra support. Part of her regretted not knowing much about the healing arts to help.

"Good morning, Suzume-sama," she dipped her head in greeting. "I'm Togashi Tsukimi of the Ise Zumi order. Breaking fast along with tea sounds good to me."

Chihaya nodded, and gestured over an acolyte, giving a quiet order for breakfast.

Of course, this being a temple, it would be a simple affair, but simple was still filling.

As she waited, she observed the pair with a thoughtful expression, and then asked, "Have you been travelling long, Isawa-san?"

Kayou slips off and returns with a pot of very strong tea and four cups. "This should warm us all."

"Many thanks, Kayou-sensei."

She pondered her own reflection in the tea, and added, "I am surprised to see you here, of all places. What brings you so far from the new temple? I hope matters are well in the valley."

"All is well, but there is a surprising amount of paperwork and petitioning involved with getting a new Order recognized," says Kayou. "Letters alone were not proving sufficient."

Joining the others, Tsukimi made sure that the sickly Phoenix was able to sit down before she joined in, neatly crossing her legs as she sat.

"I didn't know there was paperwork when it came to founding a new monastic order. Bureaucracy certainly seems to find a way to creep into all aspects of the world, even the spiritual."

"Yes, it does."

Chihaya sighed.

"The more you advance in the army, the less you do that has anything to do with fighting... it's a bit of a mystery - do well at a thing, and then you are rewarded with an entirely different duty."

"It is not too much of a mystery... but, it is always possible to refuse such positions, if one believes they're not ready for such burdens yet," Tsukimi offered, tugging gently at her white cowl to cover up her birthmark.

"Only you can truly know yourself and your limitations, after all."

"Oh, I can do it."

She shrugged.

"It just is strange, that fighting well brings you to a clerk's work."

"This one does her best," says Kayou pouring tea. "The Order of Harmonious Work is needed and it is . . . official yet not fully accepted. Orders come and go, this one finds, and a stable base must be built to insure success."

She smiled faintly, "I'm sure the clan is glad to have you in the valley, all the same."

Kayou nods. "The harvests have been good. And we are experimenting with new type of yams."

That had her complete attention.

"How did you get those?"

Hachi had accepted the help. His murmur of "Two years on pilgrimage," was swallowed up by the movements and the coughs.

He listened, also curious how new foods could be crafted. He knew Yams, having spent some little time in the area around Kyuden Suzume.

"There are several types of wild yam and the Order and some of the Suzume farmers have been seeing if we can join their favorable traits," explains Kayou. "It has only had a little success but it is very early days."

"There are a remarkable range of yams across the Empire, this one has learned, and they can grow in land unsuited to tillage. This one hopes that they may be a way to reduce the risks of famine in the future."

Yams was a little bit out of her league to understand much, other than the fact that she ate them on the occassion that they were served.

Pilgrimage was something she could understand though. "What kind of pilgrimage has taken you here to Toshi no Omoidoso, Phoenix-sama?" she inquired of the Isawa.

"Fascinating."

Chihaya looked thoughtful, but turned to hear the response of the phoenix. The acolyte had returned, and she accepted a small tray of rice cakes from him with an appreciative nod.

Setting it where all could reach it, she offered, quietly, "Itadakimasu."

"Domo arigato," says Kayou offering a short blessing over the rice.

"This one must admit, yams are not her usual topic of conversation with samurai," she says with a faint smile.

"I wished to visit various of the Temples and Shrines of the Empire. It was the will of the kami I be here at this time."

She hadn't crossed paths with the man, but she'd been far from active the last few weeks.

"I hadn't seen you in the sick quarters, but perhaps your own health required a different treatment, neh?"
