How will the Crane react to the Empress?

As the Empress asserts her power over the throne, the Crane Champion approaches her and reveal that her support among the Clans is tenuous at best. Though initially skeptical of such claims, the Otomo confirm the Champion's assessment. After a great deal of debate and frustration, the Empress finally agrees to bow to tradition and agrees that the Imperial Heir will take a Crane wife when he comes to age. The preparations and many talks about potential candidates gives the Crane access to the Empress's court, a rarity in the Empire. 50%  50%  [ 21 ]
Samurai once bearing the Daidoji name break into the Imperial Palace, kidnap the Imperial Heir, and bring him back to Kyuden Doji. With the former Imperial Heir under their "protection," the Crane ensure that the Empress cannot act against them without endangering the future of the Empire. 21%  21%  [ 9 ]
Not trusting the Empress or her hand-picked new Imperial Court, Asahina Noa infiltrates the Imperial Palace and asks the air kami to spy upon the Imperial Family and the Miharu. Amused by such a game - the first real opportunity for fun that they've had since the Imperial Palace became so stuffy and restricted - the air kami agree, allowing Noa - and by extension, the Crane - to spy upon the Empress and her Imperial Court. Asahina Noa remains in Otosan Uchi, playing a dangerous game as she replaces, compromises, and subverts the wards placed by the Miharu. 5%  5%  [ 2 ]
All across the Empire, Imperial and Lion courtiers find themselves maneuvered into lethal duels with Kakita duelists. When the Empress protests the sudden upswell of dead courtiers across the Empire, the Kakita daimyo claims that her family has merely been defending the good name of the Empress against those who support Seppun Kato and believe his lies. Surprised by Kakita Rika's firm stance and loyalty, something she had not expected from a Crane, the Empress agrees to Rika's suggestion that the Imperial Heir be trained by her family when he comes of age. 24%  24%  [ 10 ]

The Crane are not pleased with the Empress, with much of their support going towards Seppun Kato, but with the failed coup of the Steel Chrysanthemum, it becomes clear that the Empress will not be so easily dealt with.

Rather than work openly against her, the Crane fall back to their courtly ways in order to gain an advantage over the Empress and turn the situation to their own benefit.

But how will the Crane go about doing so?

Everything about the first option screams "Crane politics" to me. The Crane could use "Crane politics" for once in Hollow Throne!

Went with Kakita duelists because it's time to bring the confrontation with Kato to a head :D
