"It's not so much about strength, but technique. Let the axe handle the work - you just guide it as it falls."

She replaced the wood with another wedge.

"I cannot say I manage to consider everything - but like this axe, I try to become a better and better tool, to be used by my lord."

Glancing at the walls, and what lay beyond, she added, "Even a small army, in the right place, can cause great damage. So I would see this one broken - no more cities and villages need fall to it - especially when it so ill treats its conquests."

"That's right. What's the point of conquering somewhere if all you have is razed land?" She didn't get that.

"Technique is going to take me a bit to learn Suzume-sama. I'll try."

Maiya had another go with the new wedge. This time it went better, the log splitting in two. Not quite evenly, but not bad.

With a nod, she set another wedge in place.

"In many ways it is like that army... without guidance it simply falls upon the nearest ground. This enemy seems unable to take control of their forces to the extent necessary to enforce discipline."

Maiya waited a moment before swinging anew.

"Getting the hang of it. I've used a masakari before, but the balance is different."

Tapping her chin, she added, "So tell me, you are a Hida... I had a kinswoman who trained with your kin, did you ever meet her?"

It was unlikely, but she was always curious what sort of life Amaya had lived.
