"All clean and polished Ama-chan."

Maiya had set out the other Kaiu's armour for inspection.

"How is that blade coming along?" She asked in between mending some damage to her shoulder armour. The two had managed to get permission to use a heimin owned forge to do some work. One of the first things that needed doing was altering the tsuno blades to make them less needlessly pointy. That and fixing up Maiya's armour.

"Slowly." Is Amaya's expectably curt response. Working on a blade that requires both arms and a wide stance just to hold, without toppling over makes her task ... well, not impossible, but certainly not quick.

At least those ugly tsuno swords are so sturdy, you could break a tetsubo against them.

Which yet again, makes any forging work done on them require more effort. At least the decorations to be refitted are not hardened like the blade itself, which does help a lot.

"A better handle for a human grip will be something to look forward to. Kaiu-dono will see these as a nice gift I hope. I'll be writing to our Lord later today to let him know what is happening."

Maiya got up and shuffled over to Amaya to inspect her ongoing work.

"Need a hand?"

Sweat soaked from her hard work, the smaller Crab gives her cousin a blank stare. With a shrug of her shoulders, she gives a quick nod.

It would help, but she will make do either way. Not for the first time. Not for the last time.

The heat of the forge had left Maiya sweaty too, but it didn't overly bother her. That's what baths or damp clothes were for after the work was done.

"Ok. I'll hold it down while you remove that spike. Let's put it in the coals before it gets too cool."

Maiya hefted the large weapon and slid it into the largest forge. It was the only one that could fit the whole blade.

"Have a drink Ama-chan."

Amaya gives her cousin a quick nod in response, hands over the tongs and picks up her blacksmith's hammer.

Then she begins to methodically hammer the more offending spikes into submission.

Blade goes into the forge.
Pause to catch some breath.
Blade comes out, glowing hot.
Hammer Time.
And ... repeat. As long as needed.

It is hard, but comforting work. And it is good to have her cousin present to remember the important things that would otherwise go ignored.

The smaller Crab takes a few big gulps from the offered bottle and gives Maiya a brief smile, before returning to work.

"There we go. It's getting a better shape now." Less purposefully pointy.

It took a long time to get to this point however. The metal was incredibly hard and dense.

"Think we should do this for the other one or leave it as it is to show how they originally looked?"

"Original. Recognisable." Amaya answers extra curtly.

Her focus is still on the blade they are working on. The hilt is too large for a normal person to grip comfortably. And she is puzzling out a way to change that, but the material is simply too difficult to work with. Especially with a forge of such low quality. Not that she is more than a dabbler at Weaponsmithing anyway.

"Hilt too large." She mentions finally. "Too tough to replace."

"Just do what you can. We can do more when we eventually get back, ne?"

Maiya looked at their progress so far.

"I wonder what Kaiu-dono will say about these blades..."
