Chihaya nodded. "While I don't take particular pleasure in killing, I will be glad to end their threat and speed them to their next lives, where perhaps, with some discipline, they might began to ease their bad kharma."

A weary sigh. "Sometimes it is difficult to resist the urge to let loose my anger - seeing how they violated the bodies of my fallen friends."

She shrugged. "I don't particularly glory in ending lives - perhaps because I have taken so many, the novelty has worn off... or perhaps because I have seen so many of my friends die... and then be made a mockery of."

With a gesture past the wall, she added, "Did you see the heads?"

"I did and when we get the chance, we will make them regret that decision. They kill one of ours we kill five of theirs," he responded.

"Hai... but I knew them. Personally. They were good people, who deserved better."

She sighed. "I suppose mixed with the anger I feel is the realization that if I do the same, I will be inflicting those same feelings onto others - I wish to be better than my enemy, not just in battle, but also morally."

A faint laugh. "Though I admit it is a foolish vanity, I cannot shake it."

"Being morally superior will not keep you from death, it's a hollow victory in my eyes. You retain your Honor or sense of moral high ground and still get buried in a ditch or worse those that depend on your blade die," he said with a shrug.

"Perhaps you can do both, but I see no reason to fight on a three legged horse when it has four good legs."

That brought a hearty chuckle, and she nodded. "Hai, I suppose there is wisdom in that view as well - it is a constant battle between practicality and virtue - and yet there is some practicality within virtue."

She pointed toward those outside the walls. "They ended up that way, in part, because they did not behave morally - and it stained them, turning them into the sort of scum that would do what they now do."

"I guess I just don't worry about the next life, just this one," he said with a shrug.

"Dead is dead, just come by and try it again."

"Even within one life, you can fall."

She considered that statement, and how much she knew about it. "You can also rise back from those depths - but perhaps it is because I have witnessed the depravity to which humanity can sink, I wish to avoid it for myself."

A small shrug. "Either way, so long as your cause is just, it matters not how much joy you do or don't take - fight well and bring victory. In victory there is honor."
