A faint smile. "Nor would I fair all that much better - I might avoid giving so much offense, and spare my clan some of the challenges and castigation involved, but I would not truly excel there either."

Gesturing to her daisho, she added, "I think we are both creatures of the battlefield, Moto-san, and better we trust our courtly friends to handle those matters."

"Court is just a different battlefield, sayyeda. Make your enemy think you are one thing while you are actually another is one of the most basic rules of warfare," he said with a shrug.

A soft laugh. "Hai, that is so - but it is also a battlefield where stumbles may not harm you, but rather a village on the border between your clan and another."

She shrugged. "I prefer my battles be handled with blade and all parties present, aware of the stakes."

Extracting a koku, she placed it on the counter for the shopkeep, and then gestured to the door. "Regardless, if you do wish to go to court - this will at least allow you to look the part of a respectable gentleman soldier, there to say his part with sincerity and honesty."

"I have no wish for it, but we do not get to choose every battlefield," he said with a shrug.

"How are courts in your clan?"

Chihaya hid a chuckle behind her hand, and then answered, dryly, "Minimal. Our land is not vast - most matters can be resolved without great pomp and circumstance - often our winter courts are quiet, comfortable affairs. Art and storytelling, music and dance. We pass the time until spring, and the work resumes."

With a casual shrug, she added, snidely, "Some would call it boring, but I, at least, welcome the chance to relax without any... great clan politicking. No offense."

Gesturing toward the door, she added, "So where should we go to find these furs and leathers?"

The comment made the peasant visibly blanch, but she was wise enough not to say anything.

Chihaya sounded intrigued. "I didn't think you knew my size."

Striding outside, she glanced at the rather large horse.

"I guessed," he said heading outside.

"Probably a little big, which is good, you need some meat on them bones," he added as he removed a pack from the horse. He held it out towards her, "Hat, some boots, riding pants and a jacket. It's yours, sayyeda, to chase off the cold."

"Should I try them on?"

She gestured to the shop.

"Make sure I know how to wear them?"

In theory clothes should be simple. Yet theory wasn't always played out in practice.

Stepping inside, she pulled out the various garb.

Hrm... pointy hat, seemed simple, place on head, point upward. Check.

Jacket... oooh soft... put on over clothes.

Pants... how did they stay on without an obi?

Hrm.

And boots...

There was a lot of noise, grumbling, muttering, and intermittent thumps.

Eventually, after quite a bit of effort, she thought she'd figured it out. Not having an undershirt for the jacket, she had kept her kosode, which hung over the top of the pants, but otherwise she looked a fierce little barbarian, oversized hat and all.

Exiting, she laughed at the horrified expression of the shopkeep, and then looked to Banzurig.

"Well? Did I do it right? It feels a bit tight around the legs, but otherwise not so bad."

One hand felt the furs. "Softer than I expected... and less itchy. Maybe because it has been treated... but it is less eerie than I anticipated."

"You look fierce, and strong," he said with praise. He advised some minor adjustments but was pleased with the results.

"You look well, sayyeda, quite well."

Chihaya grinned.

"I may look the part, but don't ask me to ride one of those giants you call horses - I prefer to fight with stable land beneath me - I think I'd get seasick."

Fussing with the hat, she added, "I never could stand hats. Even my helmet I dislike... but I've taken too many hits to it to go without..."

Pulling down the flaps on the side, she fidgeted with the pointy helm.

"I'll have to get used to this one, it tickles the back of my neck."

"Hah, we could make a ride of you yet, sayyeda," he responded. "All you need is to fall once and that will be incentive enough."

Chihaya chuckled. "I don't doubt it!"

Shaking her head, she added, dryly, "Sounds rather like training with live blades - perhaps I give it too much credit, but to me, it sounds... quite dangerous."

"It is, but it also tends to weed out those worthy of riding into battle and those best used elsewhere," he responded.

She pulled off the hat, looking at it thoughtfully. "There's something to be said for such a practical sorting method."

"Thank you again for these clothes, they are, nice."

She bowed deeply from the waist.

"I must thank you as well, for dispelling my worst suspicions about your attire - I'm not sure I can get used to these pants being so... so tight, but I like this jacket."

After she straightened, she offered her hand, "Fortune's favor for you and yours, Moto-san."
