The Scorpion are being torn in two different directions by their leaders.

The Clan Champion, Bayushi Yuuto, was captured by the Steel Chrysanthemum and periodically tortured for information on Rokugan, its military strengths, and the secrets held by the Scorpion. After being rescued, it's clear that he will never fully recover from the ordeal, but he remains the Champion, and his support of the Empress is as strong as ever.

His sister, Bayushi Rumiko, believes that it is time for Yuuto to step down and pass the title of Champion to her. She is younger, more capable, and willing to act quickly to solve problems before they grow out of hand, a problem that has dogged Yuuto since he assumed the mantle. She is also engaged to Seppun Kato and is quite concerned about the amount of power being wielded by the Lion and just how many Scorpion resources went into making that happen.

A confrontation between the two powerful samurai is inevitable, but how will it end?

Rumiko victorious. Rumiko forges an alliance with the Crab, offering them a portion of Scorpion lands in exchange for their help in dealing with her brother. Rumiko manages to maneuver her brother into a duel with the Crab Champion, who cuts down the weakened Yuuto, giving Rumiko control of the Clan... and placing her in debt to the Crab when Hida Kame proves to be more politically savvy than she had anticipated.
