Horonigai clears her throat, and inquires, "How do you think you van be of service to the Imperial Families in light of this announcement, minna-san?"

Horonigai nods to Mei, thinking, fair enough.

"I imagine Doji-sama would share a similar view that I do about the danger a sovereign influenced since birth by the violent Matsu Family can bring to the Empire. Specially after the Lion slaughtered the previous Crane Ambassador some days ago."

Then, the Seppun looks to Ryuji.

Ryuji sat down his cup of tea and let out a sigh of frustration. He regained his composure and looked directly at Mei, never once in Horonigai's direction. His tone was measured but it was telling that he took slight offense to what was said."

"Miya-san. I am the child of a Matsu. My mother was married in to the Otomo. My mother birthed three children. All three of us are not murderers. All three of us are not subjected to rage and irrational behavior. All three of us are not given to a penchant for war.

There is this narrative that all Matsu are the same and that all Bayushi are the same, and all Hida are the same...In my personal opinion I feel that such a narrative is very much insulting. Sure, there are those who live up to the narrative and that is what works best for them. The important thing to remember is that we live up to what works best for us."

Ryuji stood.

"If Doji-dono gives you a duty, perform it. No one here, at least I, will not judge you. I feel that the evening has been quite long as has this day. It is indeed an honor to have met you Miya-san, I am happy to assist you in whatever you need. I bid you...and Seppun-sama, a good evening."

Horonigai listens attentively, and blinks a bit in surprise for Ryuji's abrupt exit. At first, with some hint of guilt for having offended the Otomo's previous lineage with harsh words, she inhales, and dismisses any regret.

"Good evening, Otomo-san. May the kami light your path." She tries to say that to him but it is too late. Horonigai's eyebrow burrow as she had expected for him to stay at the Embassy, and not return to the Castle, as they had previously discussed.

"Jaaa..." The Seppun says, trying to put a smile back on her face, while telling Mei, "Ne. Miya-san... There's always a way refocus one's path to righteous purpose. Otomo-san's story is quite a good example of the influence the Imperial Families can instill into the hearts of the samurai."

Horonigai presses her lips, partially disagreeing, "Ne! It is not entirely unheard of. Specially these days. I wasn't talking about ancestors, specifically, though. I was talking about the culture and traditions one is influenced by."

"We are all our own people, Seppun-sama. I was born a Miya yet raised by a Crane, instructed in their ways since I was a young child. Yes, they influenced me heavily, but once I returned to my family and learned some things from them, I then got to choose what held stronger to me. I picked some things from the Miya, and some things from the Kakita, and some from the Doji."

She finishes her tea.

"The true strength of the Empire comes from all of its people learning from one another."

Horonigai nods with a smile at Mei's last phrase. "I couldn't agree more, Miya-san. That is the way of the Kami. Teach others into the way of the Heavens, and learn from them how to adapt oneself to live in Ningen-do."

"Anno..." She looks up, wondering. Then she winces a bit, with a sly smile creeping up. She giggles and replies. "Complicated, neh. Do I have to answer now?"

Mei actually smiles genuinely.

"No, and it makes me happy to hear you ask that."

Horonigai lifts a finger after Mei's reply, and nods fiercely, saying,

"Compromise."

She winks.

Mei smirks at the wink and closes her eyes for a moment, as if it reminded her of something.

"I should retire for the evening, Seppun-sama. It was good meeting and speaking with you. I hope we have the chance again soon."

Mei rises and gives a bow.

Horonigai lifts up with Mei, and straightens her clothes to bow farewell. "Likewise, Miya-san. May the Kami light your path."
