Maiya nods at that. She looked a little proud as she talked further. "Some call it the Kaiu wall. It's what my family does. If you're heading back to Crab lands when we are we will escort you back. Our Lord might even permit us to bring you up on the Wall."

"Isn't it along a river or something? I recall that being quite important to the history of the wall being built."

"Hai. The River of the Last Stand or Seigo River. Anything beyond it is generally considered unsafe." Maiya advises.

"Aren't Hiruma lands past there? I thought they were on the other side of the Wall, after all. To my understanding."

Yukarin looked around at what was left amongst the food.

There was still a good amount of sides and rice left.

"They are, but anything outside Shiro Hiruma is potentially dangerous. The lands were purified by the late Jade Champion, but creatures can still enter them easily. No walls. Just patrols. The old way."

Maiya helped herself to a little more food. She was near full. Some sake helped wash it down, but her pace had slowed.

"That must be... rough. I could not imagine living in such dangerous circumstances. Even when we were in dangerous lands as the Unicorn, it was always with the promise that we would soon be passing through to greener pastures, as it were. That our home lay elsewhere."

"What's it like being back? Is it as green as you hoped?" Maiya asks, sitting up to look at the Yasuki more seriously. She did wonder about her time as a Unicorn and what all the horse riders were about.

"The Empire? It's pretty green, yeah. I mean... I guess if I were to say, it's more lush than I could have imagined. Growing up, we were mostly in the Burning Sands and the Western Wastes, but even those have oases, rivers and valleys and forests in the latter's case on occasion. But the unbroken stretches of farmlands and mountains and such... that's all certainly nothing I'd ever seen before."

"While I'm glad you joined the Crab, I'm sorry in a way; our lands aren't nearly as vibrant and colourful, nor peaceful, as the rest of the Empire seems to be. Well, this strange business with returned spirits aside."

After a few last bites she sets down her chopsticks and says the usual phrase signalling she was done.

"What was it like living outside the Empire? Being a Unicorn? I doubt I could even begin to imagine a fraction of it."

"That's a pretty broad question. I guess the basics would be alternating between living on the move and stopping for a bit to camp up in the yurts. Many days of the same rocks and brush and scrub grasses, broken up by the occasional caravan or settlement. I was always pretty shy as a kid... well, outside of the Unicorn I mean. Never interacted much with people in the places we stopped, though not out of any fear or malice. I just enjoyed staying with the wagons I guess, reading over scrolls or playing with the dogs."

"A yurt is like a big tent?" Maiya queried immediately. Yukarin might need to break things down more.

"What were the gaijin like?" She asks next, clearly distinguishing between Rokugani and not.

"Yeah, a yurt is kind of like a big tent. It takes a lot more time to set up than a smaller, simpler tent; But they can stand up to the elements much better, and you can actually stand and put down a futon and such. It's not actually too much more of a burden to carry since you can fit a lot of people in one; I stayed with my family a lot of the time, for instance. Later, with people from my class with the Ide. As to the gaijin..."

She shrugged slightly, "There are all sorts. We mostly met with the Ra'Shari and traders from the Jewel of the Desert... but I remember running into a couple Ujik'hai bands and some Senpet refugees. One time, we even ran into some Ashalan out on some sort of mission; That was a bit disquieting for me."

"Naruhodo..." She tried to imagine a tent as large as Yukarin made it sound. She'd seen something like that on one of the streets. It had been purple too. Must have been a yurt.

At the talk of gaijin she frowns and crosses her arms, but looks quite interested. "I don't know any of those. Gomen."

"I only know a bit myself; I was too young to absorb much back when we were out in that area, before we got to the wastelands. I would like to learn more, some time. About the peoples my former Clan met. After all, it was their job to go out and learn about those people and assess what kind of threat they may be to the Empire. I feel like it's almost still my duty, even as a Crab; The more I know about such things, that more the Crab can focus on the major threat to the south. And such."

The bushi nodded, but looked a little worried.

"As long as you don't go out there to try learning about creatures from the South. It never goes well."

Maiya glanced to Amaya for agreement then refocused on Yukarin.

"I'd still like to know more about the peoples you did meet. Ra-sha-ri? Jewel of the Desert? It's all new to us."

Yukarin nodded, setting down her chopsticks since she was done with the food. She sat back a little, relaxing.

"Okay. Well, I'll tell you what I can then..."

She spent the rest of the midday telling about her travels, the Unicorn, and the people that she'd met along the way.
