Appearance and Personality

Amaya usually wears a suit of very heavy armour. The style is outdated and despite the obvious care it is given, there are signs of wear and tear deeply ingrained through age and heavy use. It suits her stature quite well, which is of noticeably below average height for a bushi of the Crab. Her training shines through in that it seems to hinder her relatively little. A daisho matching the design of her armour is strapped to her side, and a simple blacksmith's hammer hangs from the other side of her belt.

Without the armour, Amaya makes and unimposing figure, clothed in a simple and sturdy gray kimono. If she were to go to Court, she might make for a nice decorative stone pillar.

Amaya herself is quiet and polite in a somewhat simplistic manner. She seems quite used to following orders and tends to do so with little complaint.

In battle she is slow and wary, until something deep inside her seems to snap and her attacks change from methodical into brutal. A surprising experience to someone not familiar with what a Hida Berserker truly is.

Amaya is usually in the company of her cousin Maiya, like a taciturn shadow that only sometimes strays from her side.

Background: Soshi Tameaki is the latest in a long line of magistrates descending from (via a lesser line) Soshi Saibankan himself, and in his ten-year career he has proven himself a worthy heir. He is a fair man, unswayed by emotional pleas or under-the-table offers (as far as anyone can prove), and nearly impossible to deceive. Those who have benefited from his rulings sing his praises...but those he rules against say little, as his verdicts are generally harsh in the extreme and sentences swiftly carried out in the interest of "speedy and proper justice". Unlike many members of his family, he lacks the ability to speak to the elemental kami, having instead trained extensively among his wife's family, the Bayushi. His presence in Nikesake is a clear signal of the Scorpion's intent to take the matter of the succession very seriously indeed, as well as their lethal intentions toward any who would interfere in whatever is determined to be "the proper course".

Hooks:
- Been in Scorpion lands within the last decade? Had legal trouble? You may have met Tameaki or his family.

- Been on the wrong side of the law, or know someone who has? You might have come across one of the most pitiless, cruel judges the Scorpion have to offer.

Description
A small and athletic young woman, Manami is mostly unremarkable unless seen up close. Up close, it's possible to see that a lesser known mon, of the minor Mantis Clan, rests above her heart and the mon of the Dragon Clan rests on the opposite side of her chest. Even without words she makes clear that while her clan of birth still guides her actions, it does not control her heart.

History
That she would take the name Manami, with its connotations of ocean and love, at her gempukku probably surprised no one who knew anything about the young Agasha girl whose family had found her a path away from the Dragon Mountains--and the wrathful earth kami who had long plagued her. Agasha Manami had always been talented in speaking to the kami, with seemingly great potential as a child, but the inexplicable animosity of earth kami created angst among fellow Agasha, who wondered how the family would cope with such a liability.

It was, in large part, Manami's own independent-mindedness--and her indulgent parents--that resolved the situation. Finding a Dragon genuinely interested to study among the Mantis was a boon for the clan, allowing all their less-problematic children to stay safely at home while still satisfying a minor pact with the Mantis--whose resources were always needed by the economically disadvantaged Dragon. Sending Manami to the Mantis shugenja school seemed to make everyone happy, at least for a while.

Manami took to the Mantis Isles as if arriving in her true home. The customs of the Mantis, particularly the sailors, were an obvious point of fascination, as were the histories of the various minor clans. Manami was an adequate student, bright but impatient and unabashedly more focused on skills she could use on the water than in a temple.

Now the next life milestone is creeping up on the energetic shugenja. Her talent and somewhat beloved status among the Mantis make her both more valuable and more dangerous to the Dragon than before, which makes her yojimbo (Mirumoto Takeshi no Kouken) sometimes uncertain about the quality of his assignment to her. In true Dragon fashion he is trying to let her find her own path, conscious that she is still young and has plenty of growing up to do.

Even though she's not really important enough to attend an Imperial Winter Court, Manami was there at Morikage Toshi to perform respectably in taryu-jiai, affirming the brilliance of that Dragon-Mantis deal from years ago. She was not near court when Hantei XVI murdered his descendent. Thanks to her yojimbo and her own spellcasting ability, Manami was an active protector of refugees from winter court during the flight to Toshi no Omoidoso--and she will not forget what she saw of the spirit warriors that pursued them.

Description
As a proud Hare samurai, Usagi Kimika almost always has a clan mon on her kimono or at least a Hare-inspired design. A warrior by training, she stands with confidence and projects authority, though as a minor clan diplomat she has fairly little of it. Typically, Kimika has what might be described as "This is an Astonishing Waste of Time Face." Her training keeps any serious sign of disdain from her body language, but it takes something exceptional to bring a smile to the woman who would pretty clearly prefer that her duty found her on a battlefield.

History
Kimika has done a lot in her life -- much of it not for discussion in polite circles. The former Scorpion arrived in the lands of the Hare in late 755, rushed into a marriage for political reasons and since then a dedicated retainer to the Hare champion.

Kimika began life, and learned the ways of the warrior, as Shosuro Kimika in a Bayushi dojo, the daughter of a respectable but unremarkable family. She grew up with a tight group of girls of the same age (Shosuro Natsumi, Bayushi Kaede, Soshi Eri) who, even attending different dojo, remained frequent companions. They even served together against the Crab in the War of Crossed Pincers.

After the war, Kimika didn't see her friends as she returned home and was then dispatched to Hare lands by year's end. In the spring of 756 she became Usagi Kimika and began her service to Usagi Yukana. Over time, Kimika's skills in court -- and her loyalty to Yukana -- have brought her recognition as a competent ambassador for the young but growing clan and assignment to important work beyond the Hare borders.

Before she became one of the first to marry into the Unicorn, Akemi had seen a lot. Ever since her Gempukku all of two years ago, it was clear that Akemi was beloved by the Air Kami. She had shown ability to understand and commune with them at an unbelievably young age, and by the time she finished her Gempukku she was casting at an advanced level. This extreme focus on the kami nearly cost her however, as she started to lose her focus on other elements of her schooling.

Why she has travelled with the armies into the forest is a bit of a mystery, but she seems to be like the winds; reactive, impulsive and enthusiastic. She came out of the campaign a bit stronger, and more focused, but she was still prone to moments that could only be described as 'air-headed'.

Akemi was part of the assistance team for the Suzume hills, after convincing her kin to offer their support to the small clan. She also went herself to help. Even though she didn't understand farming, or agriculture in general, her happy nature and love of stories made the journey all the better. Although she briefly left to assist her kin at Ryoko Owari (an experience she can only describe as horrifying), she returned and spent a large amount of time helping, until after the now infamous Sparrow-Imperial wedding, where she returned home and then onwards to get married.

Akemi has been adjusting to her life as a Unicorn better than most Doji-born would. She has taken on a role of teacher, teaching the children (and some adults who were willing to listen) the proper way to act and speak in Rokugan.

Appearance and Personality

The girl now known as Moto Akemi is a little bit of a confusion at first viewing. Her doji-blue eyes and white hair (not as long as some remember) as well as perfect skin clearly shows her as a Crane. Her clothes have a mix of Blue and Purple, so she could still easily be confused as a Crane. In fact, it isn't until you get to the mons that any might think she wasn't a Crane; Mons of the Asahina...and the Moto.

The little Moto has taken to arts that make her feel connected to the kami of Air, even taking up Kyujutsu just to hear the kami sing as an arrow flies through. Not that she's ever fired an arrow at someone before. She dresses to match her free-flowing ways, with clothes that are made to catch the wind.

She is sometimes seen with an odd little animal, that she calls Spike-Spike-kun. On account of the fact it's very Spiky!

A generally quiet and reserved girl, and originally a student of the Artisan Academy, Yuko inherited her family's ancestral blade and was sent to take up the way of the sword with the Mirumoto and the Togashi. She reappeared in Crane lands when the naga incursions began and soon became well-known for her part in defending the villages against the attacks of the snakemen, and perhaps better known for the vengeance with which she did it. Yuko was frequently seen ending the conflict covered in the blood of her enemies and those who saw her engaged in battle whisper about the madness that seizes her eyes when she is fighting.

She took part in Kassenko's expedition to exterminate the naga and served with distinction. Following that conflict, she was instrumental in helping the Crane eradicate the Gozoku from within their own ranks, serving as duelist against many of the accused.

After the purge, Yuko returned to Crane lands, serving as yojimbo for a few prominent samurai - her reputation doing more to dissuade would be assailants than her skill.

The sword she bears at her side is the Kakita blade Ketsuyoku, those of the Asahina family may know of the stories that surround it, while those of the larger Empire may know of her family's reputation for producing talented duelists and warriors - something that is quite uncommon for the Asahina family as a whole.

The loss of Kakita Airi has shaken his confidence somewhat, but he remains determined to protect the embassy and the city he loves.

A true child of the wind and sky, Samara rode in to Rokugan as part of the rearguard in the last wave of Unicorn to return to their ancestral lands. An archer and outrider by training, Samara found it odd that she was assigned to convey relief to Nikesake...

Appearance-wise she is rather average. She maintains a well-kept appearance despite her assignments, however her hair tends to have a mind of its own. Her eyes are the only aspect of note, always on the lookout for potential ambush.

Appearance

Born of strong Moto and Shinjo stock, Batzurig is a warrior in frame and stature. He takes after his uncle's side, the Moto daimyo, and is an impressive figure. Handsome with strong features and a powerful athletic build. He dresses on heavy furs and leathers with thick boots and eschews the styles of the court for that of his people. He has tattoo sleeves on both arms and many scars.

History

Kuge by birth his mother and father died early in his youth and he was riased in the household of his uncle, he excelled in training and is known as an expert rider and excellent swordsman with the scimitar his preferred weapon. Otherwise he is an outsider looking to find his place in this foreign land.

Miya Mei's hair is white, eyes blue, and the powder blue Kimono with the Kakita mon embroidered into the shoulders of her kimono all suggest her to be a member of Crane. However, upon closer inspection, one would find the Miya mon over her heart, revealing her status as a member of the Imperial Families.

Her build is slender, but not frail.

She speaks with the niceties any Crane would expect, but also with the authority of an Imperial.

She carries an elegantly decorated katana that has been passed down to her from her late sensei, named "Meng", or dream.

Additionally, Mei can occasionally be seen riding her Rokugani pony, Ti-Lu.

For any who have knowlege of the workings of the Forbidden City, Mei returned from a Miai in Unicorn lands when they first returned to Rokugan, and left the miai in shame without a match. She was then assigned to low ranking imperial courtiers as a Yojimbo before being hand selected to work for Doji Suiminko. She mostly passes through the halls of the Forbidden City without ever being noticed, having long since been forgotten as another spoiled Imperial who amounted to nothing.

For the rest of Rokugan it would seem that Yuichi fits the stereotypical Yogo family member and that stereotype actually defines him very accurately. Bitter, cynical, paranoid, sarcastic, almost nihilistic, his way of life is defined by the curse that lingers in his bloodline.

He has never felt loved in his entire life. His mother died because of his father, who triggered his curse by falling in love with her. After that his father, overwhelmed by grief, commited suicide. So Yuichi was raised by the rest of their family, barely having any meaningful connection with any of them, besides his teaching lessons. He hated his childhood in Fukitsu province, he hated the rest of the 'haughty' Scorpion members who bullied him during his first travel away from his ancestral lands. And of course he hates, with all his heart, the Shadowlands and those who seek the power of Jigoku.

There some few things that Yuichi does not hate. He actually respects, but not love, his family members elders for enduring so much during their lives. He respect the power of the kami, and tries to minimize his usage of their powers, taking his role as a priest of the kami very seriously. He respects the Kuni family (and Crabs in general) for their relentless fight against the Shadowlands and the followers of the Ninth.

Yuichi was ordered to find a wife and was sent to the miai organized by the, recently returned, Unicorn clan. Barely even trying to get a wife, to his surprise one middle aged lady, Otaku Xantoko, picked up him as a husband. His marriage with Otaku Xantoko has not been a change to his way of life, since as a Yogo, he just visits her only to fulfill his marital duties and nothing more. There's absolutely no love from him towards her.

Yuichi has a very deep connection to the spiritual world. When he was born the priests and sages of the Yogo family tried to look at his future, finding very difficult to see beyond some vague and diffuse future paths. His spiritual presence is quite tangible and for some unknown reason, spirits tend to gather arround him and Yuuichi often can be seen in communion with the kami when he has some freetime. Apparently he was also born with some evil residual kharma from his former life, which manifest itself in his discoulored right eye, or so the sages and people say.

He always wears his oni mask, rarely taking it off. Another odd quirk this priest has.

Description
A little taller than average and on the pretty side of plain, there is little about Moshi Yuko that stand out . . . until you notice the nervous energy that surrounds her. She is always watching, listing, questioning . . . and taking notes.

Her kimonos are of good quality but seem to be several generations out of date as far as style and cut go.

History
A daughter of the Moshi clan, she was gifted with the ability to speak with the kami, and thus was trained as a priestess but her trun love is watching, and trying to understand, the interaction among people. She loves rumors and stories, so much so that it caused some problems among the tight knit Moshi family. So, she was send to Winter Court to act as a scribe to the joint delegation from the younger clans.

She and her personal scribe were out acquiring more paper when things went to hell and they were able to escape. Much fleeing later, they have found safety(?) in Nikesake.

Description
Tetsu wears an ensemble of black clothing, ostensibly to match her hair. Her sleeves were long torn off to reveal her tattoos: a Crab crawling from her left arm atop a boulder on her shoulder and a Mantis ready to pounce down from her right shoulder upon its prey. There are outlines of tattoos to come along her arms and neck, though indiscernible thus far.

Her trousers are often secured at the hem, lest they get in her way. When she can get away with hit, she wears plates over her torso and thighs. Still, it is clear from her arms and hands at least that her body has seen abuse.

What is Known (TN 40 Heraldry)
Before Tetsu joined the Order, she was an unpopular farm girl. She abandoned her so-called home and ended up arriving at the High House of Light. There she fit in much better and slipped by under tutelage without trouble.

After her graduation, Tetsu embarked on a pilgrimage to visit various temples, monasteries, shrines, and so on in search of Enlightenment. It is said that she was invariably cruel to peasants, though she would claim otherwise.

Story Hooks

Togashi monks can often be a source of confusion. Tetsu is no different, spewing her form of wisdom wherever she goes.
Never has there been a peasant who has been happy with Tetsu's arrival. And if one does exist, then it must be madness.
Animals voice their dissent for Tetsu much more readily than Tetsu. She is quick to do so in return.
