She shakes her head. "I have no answers but many questions. A condition I have now passed to you, maybe--I am sorry about that." Her smile is shy and a bit rueful. "You are far from the sea and your home, and perhaps would prefer not to add my puzzles to your troubles."

"I'm not sure the second is all that much of a puzzle, though I suppoe I could be wrogn about that too." He pursued his lips. "The changes you talked about, were they quick ones or did they take a great deal of time to happen?" She seemed to have some first hand eperience with this story perhaps she could enlighten him?"

Myo-en frees her hands from her sleeves to tap a finger against her lips. "This was several years ago, but I... it was subtle at first, then sudden. Men seemed hazy in the mind, complained of headaches, hunger, thirst--that was not very strange, because it was hot and we marched long days. Then they began to fall and cry out, and we could see their bodies change. They changed from the skin in. Scales, feathers, hair... then claws... then limbs..." She shakes her head rather like a wet dog trying to rid itself of rainwater.

"Some of them did not change all the way, but came back to themselves. Their friends sang and made music--that seemed to call them back, somehow."
