Day 10 [Early Morning] Within These Walls

Ryuji woke early and went for a brief walk around the castle before having breakfast. He admired the architecture of the building and various art pieces that were around.

Wasako woke up a bit later than usual and found herself wandering the castle. The rain and gloomy rain had made the sun almost a distant memory. She roamed the hallways and saw the rather important Otomo along her path. While she didn't want to interrupt him from appreciating the castle, she did still bow deeply in greeting.

Ryuji noticed the Mirumoto passing his way and greeted her.

"Ohayoo Gozaimasu." he greeted with a bow.

"Ohayou gozaimasu, Otomo-sama," she finally spoke up seeing as she was either noticed or managed to pull him after all. "I hope I haven't bothered you...This one is Mirumoto Wasako, of the Northern Wall Mountains."

"You have not bothered me at all. I am Otomo Ryuji. Imperial Investigator and Diplomat." he said followed with a bow.

"And are you up this early to enjoy the rain?"

"I suppose I'm up," she chuckled at first. "I could swear I've seen nothing but rain for weeks now. However, I suppose it is entrancing, to a small degree. It's far better than seeing snow at this time of the year at least."

She knit her brows together in thought. "Forgive my ignorance, Otomo-sama...and I may ask, what is an Imperial Investigator? Is it like a magistrate, I suppose?"

"Yes...like a yoriki of sorts. I assist magistrates in their investigations."

She gave a small bow when she was provided with the answer. "Oh, then it is an honour to make your acquaintance, Otomo-sama. With your authority and jurisdiction, I imagine that you do a fair share of important work with the Imperial families and the Throne. I also had the pleasure of making the acquaintance of Seppun Horonigai-sama, who was from the Imperial Capital I believe."

"Yes. She and I are both from Otosan Uchi. And it isn't so much authority or jurisdiction...I am happy to serve where I am needed, like questioning someone for testimony."

"Hai...I have heard much things about Otosan Uchi and honestly, I find it a bit difficult to fully picture the capital," she chuckled and gave a hapless shrug. "I suppose matters of investigation in the capital require several parts, and especially experts to handle keep aspects. The magistrates in our area are usually on their lonesome...and likely cover several days of travel of area around them. However, that area might have fewer people than one street in Nikesake."

"Hmmm... Interesting."

Ryuji began to walk and gestured to her to follow him.

"Have spent much time outside of the mountains?"

Wasako followed alongside easily enough. "I haven't lived in the Northern Wall mountains my entire life, just the last many years ago. But I suppose no, I haven't really. Actually, this is my first time out of the Dragon lands. I am here at the behest of my sensei's wisdom."

"Interesting. And what is it that you are seeking in this wisdom?"

"I suppose everything below the mountain, perhaps? You can only learn so much while in a dojo and teaching others the same way. Eventually, you do arrive at a point in your lessons where you must broaden your horizons so that you know what is truly ahead otherwise you might mistakenly think you've learned everything. To start on this journey, I was to observe the Lion Clan, their ideas of martial prowess, and warfare. I don't think he was expecting me to walk into an actual war, maybe," she shrugged at that.

"You're a samurai. Aren't we to live our lives ready for war?"

"Oh, of course, Otomo-sama!" Wasako quickly said as she stood upright like she was at the ready. "I'm not one to shirk away from such possibilities and my blade is always at the ready for conflict to defend the Empire. If nothing else, this unfortunate incident has provided me with a lot of lessons and much to meditate on."

"We ever endure to learn... I have never been to the Dragon mountains, I am sure it is lovely there."

"I do intend to return to the mountains with something to share once this is all over. At the moment, I do intend to help put in any way I can and not just observe," she nodded firmly at that.

"There are many Dragon mountains but I can easily say that the Northern Wall Mountains are perhaps the most...ominous? They are the divine between Rokugan and the edge of the Empire, I believe. They possess a sort of unreachable tranquil beauty. While it's best to see them for yourself and interpret them in your own way, they are quite hard to get into, even once you find yourself in the Dragon lands."

"Hmmmm... And from your observation Mirumoto-san, what are your views of the state of the throne?"

Wasako gave a wide blink at the question, seemingly not have a ready answer to the question. After another blink, she dipped down into a bow. "Sumimasen, Otomo-sama. Do you mean in general...or the present? I suppose the present is easier to answer for as a grave crime has just happened and the Empire had scarcely any time to mourne. We are in need of order if we are to see any semblance of normalcy and the Steel Chrysanthemum represents absolute chaos."
