And guarding ATN 5 to bring her up to average ATN will likely mean she still gets hit. You might do better attacking or guarding us, as it might mean enemies die faster/miss.

I think you can spend 2 simple actions guarding for +30 atn

Right, and it carries over to the next round. So I'll start her off at TN 35, then boost the Kaiu +15 round 1.

You could also center stance the round before start of combat so you get center bonus for your turn (if you don't want to guard)

It makes sense that the Daidoji guards since his actually caries through to the next turn, where the Kaiu's wouldn't. Aya and the two Kaiu go Center, Daidoji goes whatver and guards 2x

If it lasts for 2 turns then couldn't he guard during preparation turn 1?

It lasts the turn it's done, and then the following round, so the prep round 1 guard would expire before combat began.

Your plan makes sense. Have a guard from me in prep turn 2, assuming this is allowed.

It will last until my initiative on turn 1.

If I'm following this correctly. Unless by next turn it means the turn itself, rather than me 'go' on the turn.

The text reads that it's a penalty to "all die rolls," so I think it does.
