"No, Toshi no Omoidoso is my station, though the Governor of the city had granted me permission to ensure the arrival and safety of the refugees from there to here after the Steel Chrysanthemums forces had attacked."

"I'm sure the people of Toshi no Omoidoso appreciate the assistance. I imagine that the way back is cut off by the army now though," he guesses. "Was the city taken?"

"Indeed it is, so now I am here doing what I can to ensure the people stay safe. If another evacuation is needed, I'll be going with. Need to see the duty through til the end. As far as Toshi no Omoidoso goes, it is hard to say. I imagine the small force of defenders there would have put up an excellent fight, but the Steel Chrysanthemum's warhost is huge. My hope is after we routed their vanguard and discovered the southern pass through the mountains blocked, they decided the city was not worth their time and passed it by."

"I hope that they are safe then. We simply need to do our part to keep everyone here safe. I was actually on my way there since that's where I heard the fighting was, but I was told to stop in here at the Crane embassy first. It seems I left around the same time the evacuation started, so it's a good thing I came here."

"The same morning that I first heard the news. Some folks apparently completely bypassed Toshi no Omoidasu when the gates were closed to them and found their way farther south. I left home five days ago and have been in the city for three."

"Never. As I said, I was born on the Great Ride. At most we saw small villages, but none of the buildings there were larger than our largest tents. Kyuden Doji is the largest I've seen," he replies. "Nikesake's streets are too narrow and packed to ride through properly. You can never tell when someone might step in the way."

"Few cities are well suited to ride through the streets without care I'm afraid. I have heard Kyuden Doji is beautiful, with amazing gardens. I doubt I will ever get to see it though. I do wish I could"

"You never know. Growing up I thought the Empire was so far away that I would never get the chance to see it. Just because something is unimaginable now doesn't mean it always will be. The future is unwritten," he says with a smile.

“You have mentioned the Long Ride? Is that a period of particular history with the Unicorn?

"It was our return to Rokugan. Originally we were going to come through the south, but through magical means we were told of the danger there. So we had to go all the way around to the north," he replied with a nod. "And that was after years of already making our way back towards the empire. Moving an entire clan that had vastly grown over centuries to quite a bit of time."

"That would be something to ask an Ide about. They took good care of us. I know very little of such things myself. We did a fair amount of hunting and foraging to supplement food, but they maintained the stock of supplies."

"I wonder if that is why your clan has a taste for food so....unheard of inside the Empire. I imagine it would have been impossible to find enough poultry or fish or rice to eat when on the move."

"Well, it was centuries of eating food in distant lands that gave us our taste for foods the Empire does not eat. I'll likely miss the old flavors, but learning of the spiritual impacts that it can have, I'm also not overly concerned about the change in diet," he says with a slight shrug. "And rice is plentiful compared to the years of my youth when it was mostly wild rice or rarely traded for."

"I spoke to another former Unicorn last night who also lamented not being able to eat red meat anymore. She said that it must be a law that was introduced after the Unicorn left the Empire, as their history books had no mention of it. I admit, hearing both of you mention it now it does have me curious."
