"I imagine there are many who appreciate being at your back."

Masahiko laughed aloud.

"Hai!"

Then there was a pause.
"Well, I imagine there would be. The Embassy has never come under direct attack, so..." He shrugged. "I suppose we'll see."

"One wonders about that, whether the Embassies here would maintain separate defenses, or if they would stand in general defense of the city.

"I could hope for the latter, since my Clan has not an embassy here." Yet "But I could well understand the former."

"My understanding is that the Crane Embassy is being prepared as a fall-back position for the city in general. A redoubt. But I do not imagine that anyone believes that an embassy and its guard can reasonably hold for long against an enemy that could handle the city walls and the Lion legions."

"I was surprised to hear the misrepresentations in the rumors," Masahiko said as he set the dummy to rights.

"About the embassy, I mean. Relations were...chilly in the city before you all arrived, but we could sort of get along. You know, on the level of one bushi to another. This situation has been rather...challenging, for a simple fighter like myself."

The Crane shrugged. "Well, it is what it is." He swung the ono through another figure.

"Still, we'd better get back to that bushi-level functioning soon, because the dead aren't going to wait forever."

"I'm going to have to steal that line. 'The dead won't wait forever.' You'd think they'd wait longest of all, really."

"Pretty solemn, huh? Have you seen these guys, though? The Kitsu say they're not exactly the patient type."

Another laugh from the Kasuga, and, because his player is phone-posting, an unrolled series of strikes with a practice knife at his own dummy, not nearly so formidable as the big Crane's.

The rhythmic thuds of the ono served as counterpoint, at least until an Ikoma called to the big Crane "Hiko-chan!" The axe swung up to its resting position on his shoulder, and after a moment's discussion and a bow and smile to the tortoise, the Crane was off to a round of sparring with the Lion.
