Horonigai's smile vanish as soon as she senses the danger that announcement could bring down, to her and to Sukima. Her left hand slowly goes down to take hold of her daisho.

Sukima's fan snapped up over her face, concealing the thoughtful look that passed over her features. It seemed ridiculous, but... something like this could work in her favor. Still, she moved a step closer to Horonigai. This could prove unsafe for the moment.

Mogami followed along a ways behind Monnkhbaatar, not having a horse to speed along her travel, but she arrived through the city gates as well after her visit to the temple as well. When she heard the Miya proclamation, Mogami had a hot flash pass through her.

"Outrageous!"

She exclaims, forgetting her place.

"The Imperial Families now dare to imply that the Empress is fallible in her honor?"

Monkbhaatar moved through the gathered people to get a better look. Then noticed Tetsuko and her hand resting on her blade. He really was not up to date on all of the politics in the empire. So he moved to stand beside her, clearing his throat and giving a nod before starting to scan the crowd as nonchalantly as he could for any signs of people intending to perpetrate violence.

Glad for his bland features, Degarashi simply looked at the Miya through the slits in his hat and smiled.

Subtle. Even if untrue the damage such a claim would inflict was unprecedented, and unlikely to backlash against the one who made it.

Then he blinked, digging in his ear after the Lion spoke out loudly. Not subtle. Not one bit.

Nodding to her cousin she lowered her voice. "Good morning Doji-san, it is good to see you. Have you had rice today?"

Her eyes calmly took in the scene, preparing to move to the Herald's defence if required. "Did you hear the entire announcement?"

Chihaya didn't make any particularly visible response, but those in the know might find her stance had shifted slightly, her blades shifted in her obi so that they cleared a tiny space around her.

She was ready, but for what, she did not know.

From Tetsuko's other flank, Iko offered a shallow, wary bow to the Crane that she didn't recognize.

Although Tetsuko's recognition set her at ease. One couldn't be too careful, these returned spirits were indistinguishable from the current generation of samurai.

The Miya finally finishes reading (and re-reading) the remainder of the scroll. To his credit, his voice does not waver as he finishes.

"The honorable Seppun Kato thus asks the Empress to peacefully step down and allow the rightful line of succession to assume the throne without further drama. To the people of the Empire, he asks that they show the Empress forgiveness for her single moment of indiscretion."

A pause. "Finally, on an unrelated and much happier note, Seppun Kato wishes to announce his engagement to Bayushi Rumiko, sister of Bayushi Yuuto, the Scorpion Champion. The Empire will surely rejoice to know that their future is in such capable hands."

The Miya closed his scroll and stared off into the distance, trying to keep a straight face.

Sukima had considered speaking out against the Lion... but then they read out the last few words. She pressed her lips together and looked toward her cousin. "Yes... we should go quickly, I think. Let us speak there."

Among the throng, in the background of all those who were present, was Mari. She didn't step forward at first, or really intend to speak up at all. But she was listening, admittedly to the rereading of the announcement. A whisper to some of the heimin to get more of the details of what was going on and she frowned to herself, staying quiet, but watching all that transpired.

Interesting... and troubling.

"And I yours cousin. Seppun Kato is one of the recently deceased Emperor's brothers. He has been...politically active...for some time." The games begin.

With the announcement seemingly over Tetsuko did another scan of the crowd to see if anyone looked likely to do something dumb. She had experience.

That left her flabberghasted, and she could only shake her head faintly...

Already she could see the possible angle of attack, yet... scorpion. Letting one into your house was as dangerous as poking a Lion in the eye, and Kato was doing both.
