EVENT: Repentance (D8, Early Afternoon)

Izumi’s voice rises, cutting through the incoherent roaring of the portal like a ray of sunlight on an overcast day. You can see the portal shrinking as she moves her hands over the mirror.

Then you notice the shapes forming around her, vaguely humanoid spirits with screaming skulls in place of faces and far too many hands for anything that had once been mortal.

Each character can make a TN 20 attack roll against the spirits using any weapon they possess. Prone characters have -2k0 on this roll and cannot use Large weapons.

On a success, they force one of the spirits to recoil and disappear, while a failure results in either a miss or a successful attack that the spirit seems to ignore. Each successful Raise on this attack roll allows the character to attack one additional spirit; a character who possesses the ability to make two attacks on their turn gains a Free Raise on this roll.

There are a total of five spirits attempting to grab Kitsu Izumi. If even one of them is not defeated, it sets itself upon her, ruining her ritual as it rips her into pieces.

Homura was quick into action, drawing her Katana. She felt the water running through her body, and it spurred her on.

Homura spun around, and saw that the ghosts were gone.

Chiyo saw the spirits coming. She couldn't do anything, but Homura could.

She held her spell scroll aloft - the water kami still raging outside.

"Again Ikoma-san!"

The castle trembles and shakes as Izumi completes her ritual. "It's finished!" she calls out, laughing as she cries tears of blood. "It's over!"

The portal roars as its begins to shrink and close in on itself. A powerful wind begins to blow into the portal, sucking up small rocks and snow into the depths of Toshigoku. The courtyard cracks and begins to break apart into large chunks, which are also sucked into the swirling darkness of the Realm of Slaughter.

Izumi raise an arm, shielding her face against the wind, but it's clear that she's simply too close to the portal to escape... as is everyone else.

Each character should roll Initiative.

In descending Initiative order, each character can attempt a TN 15 Athletics/Strength roll to grab onto something sturdy to keep from being sucked into Toshigoku. A character with a weapon can plunge the weapon into the ground to give themselves a Free Raise on this roll, but doing so damages the sword and gives it a -1k1 penalty on its damage rolls until it can be repaired. If this would reduce the weapon’s kept dice to 0, the weapon breaks at the end of this event.

Characters who fail this roll are sucked into Toshigoku.

Additionally, a character can call a Raise to attempt to grab onto either Kitsu Izumi or the Mirror of Sorrow as they are both pulled into the portal. If a character successfully grabs onto Kitsu Izumi, they save her from being pulled into the portal as she completes the ritual. If a character successfully grabs onto the Mirror of Sorrow, they are able to tuck the item away, keeping it for themselves with everyone else in the thread believing that it was sucked up into the portal.

Setsuna slammed their jitte into the ground. They looked back at Ikumi and knew the honorable thing to do was to save her, even if she was creepy.

The Bayushi wanted to live, to defeat Touki. But Touki... Touki would go for her.

So Setsuna pulled the jitte out a bit, drifting back next to Ikumi. Then they grabbed onto the daimyo. "Hold on... Gah."

As Chiyo was pulled towards the portal, she felt her grip slip - she had spent too much strength to get to this point - it was beyond her.

She saw Tani catch Izumi. And she smiled. Their mistake had been remedied. The damage was undone. Perhaps not entirely - but it was a start. Perhaps...perhaps Izumi would see that there was good left to be done in the world.

She thought of Isoshi...she thought of Murasaki - her beautiful girl. So bright and full of joy. Her life would not be ruled by slaughter spirits.

She smiled.

As she slipped towards the gate, she looked towards Izumi.

"Izumi-sama - teach my daughter about her ancestors!"

Tani wasn't going to leave anything to chance. She grabbed Izumi and held on for dear life, nodding to Setsuna as she did. Fuck the mirror.

The mirror disappears into the portal with Seppun Chiyo and Ikoma Homura. Kinuko's unmoving body pinwheels past them a moment later, disappearing into the yawning maelstrom.

Then, the portal implodes with a sudden change of pressure that makes everyone's ears pop, and Izumi collapses to the ground, along with Tani and Setsuna.

With a cough, she looks at the two of them, then over her shoulder at where the portal had been a moment before. Blood still covered her cheeks. "...Chiyo..."

She forces herself to stand on weak legs. "We... we have to get back to the castle. The spirit armies... will sense the portal's closure. This castle is not safe for us."

There's a pause as she places a hand over her heard and looks down at the ground. "Thank you, both of you."

"Thank us when we get you home safely, Kitsu-sama." Tani's game face hadn't left, sans the tears that refused to fucking leave. She took point, bisento held out as they moved to exit the castle. If there was a chance to, she would grab Kinuko's effects.

Setsuna didn't have three arms, nor a stinger, to catch onto any of the others falling out. By the time the whirlwind finished, they weren't even sure if it was time to get to their feet.

"It was my duty," Setsuna murmured, pulling on their jitte. Another tug and the weapon snapped in half. After a blank stare at the handle, the Bayushi threw it towards the portal's direction.

"But the Matsu is right. We'll need to get back first."

~ ~ ~ Sometime Later ~ ~ ~

Tumbling, screaming, battered from one side to another, Homura and Chiyo plunge into the depths of Toshigoku. Your stomachs twist and your ears pop as you’re drawn into another realm, one of fury and rage and screaming. After a moment, you realize that you are screaming as well.

The horizon is a violent swatch of reds, oranges, and blacks, as if there were a great fire nearby. A hot wind blows past you, trailing cinders and flakes of ash as it brings the twin scents of smoke and spilled blood to your nostrils. You soon realize that there is ground beneath your feet, cracked and parched, broken up by numerous rents and fissures.

After taking a moment to reorient yourself in this strange new realm, you find yourself staring at the only significant landmark around you, a huge mound of corpses. No, more like a mountain of bodies, all of them clad in the shattered armor of samurai. The corpse-pile looms above you, hundreds of feet tall, a monument to slaughter and warfare on a level that you find difficult to even comprehend.

Figures move atop the corpse-pile, stumbling as they struggle to climb up the treacherous mountain of dead flesh and reach its summit. There, a lone samurai clad in Lion colors stands fighting against dozens of frenzied attackers.

You're distracted from the sight by a faint clinking sound as the Mirror of Sorrows falls to the ground at your feet, evidently drawn in from the mortal realm much like yourselves.

Homura wouldn't ever admit to being afraid. She had too much pride, too much cockiness.

For once, after all the screaming had finished, and she landed with a painful thud, and after she saw the mountain of dead bodies...she might admit she was scared. She took deep breaths, hating the taste of this vile disgusting realm already. Then she noticed the thud of another body landing; the Imperial girl. Chiyo? That was it.

"Ugh. Remind me never go to into another realm again."

Homura pushed herself up, checking her armour and weapons were ok. Knowing they were, because landing on armour was painful.

She stretched, looking around, before noting the mirror had arrived. She stamped on it, doubting that would actually do anything, but it made her feel better. She offered a hand to Chiyo, to help her up.

"So, uh, are we basically going to die and become one of them now?"
