Part 3: Bottleneck

More and more Toshigoku spirits coalesce from the air to join the battle, but you succeed in fighting them back long enough for an opening to appear in the mob. “Go!” Kitsu Izumi shouts as she makes a dash for it, running up the steps and into the castle proper.

Following her lead, you rush away from the Toshigoku spirits as they chase you up the castle’s steep steps. “I just have to reach the portal and perform the ritual,” she calls back to you. “Someone has to hold them off!”

Rules: Each character must make an Honor Roll (roll XkX, where X = your Honor Rank) and post it in this thread.

Once this is done, in descending Honor Roll order, each character has the option of remaining behind to hold off the slaughter spirits. If they do so, they will succeed in holding off the Toshigoku spirits and buy time for Kitsu Izumi to finish her ritual. The character can say their (quick) farewells to the other members of the thread, after which they are killed. If the character has the Great Destiny advantage, this is considered the resolution of that destiny, and the character will become widely known as the hero that sacrificed themselves to help Kitsu Izumi close the portal.

If the character has the Dark Fate disadvantage, they are still killed holding off the spirits, but they will return as an NPC-controlled slaughter spirit who will join the Steel Chrysanthemum and become an influential member of his court.

As soon as a character chooses to remain behind, the other characters can progress to the next stage of this event.

Should no character choose to remain behind, the characters will progress to the next stage of this event, which will become significantly more difficult.

"You should get going." Kinuko said over her shoulder to anyone else who might not have already gone on with Izumi. "You have an empire to save."

Kinuko had already pared her nails in preparation for something like this. The clippings from which along with a small lock of hair were set aside with a last letter and what few effects she owned.

She had wanted something impossible in this life. Maybe it was better this way.

At least the ones close to her would have something to burn on the funeral pyre.

Kinuko set her katana's scabbard aside. Wouldn't be needing that anymore.

Part 4: The End

Rushing into the castle, you spill out into the courtyard and find a nightmare waiting for you. The portal is a savage rent in the sky, a dimensional rip that seethes and churns like a maelstrom of crimson energy. Just glancing at the portal makes your head hurt, a pressure behind your eyes that makes it difficult to concentrate on anything other than thoughts of violence and bloodshed.

Kitsu Izumi stares up at the portal for a long moment before kneeling down and removing the small, circular mirror from beneath her arm. Somehow, just glancing at the mirror seems to hurt your eyes more than the yawning portal before you.

She places the mirror on the ground in front of her, then clasps her hands together in front of her and begins to pray, her dark hair whipping frantically around her in the interdimensional wind.

You’re not sure how long the ritual will take, but it’s clear that you’ll have to keep Izumi safe until she finishes her prayers and closes the portal.

Rules: Kitsu Izumi’s concentration must remain unbroken as she attempts to complete the ritual.

As Izumi begins her ritual, the realm of Toshigokul releases a powerful roar of anger and rage, strong enough to shatter eardrums and knock everyone in the courtyard off their feet.

Each character must attempt a TN 15 Athletics/Strength roll to resist the powerful wind. Any character can call a Raise on this roll to rush to Izumi’s side and steady her as she continues the ritual.

If a character succeeds on this roll, they remain standing as the interdimensional wind roars around them. On a failure, the character is knocked off their feet.

If no character successfully steadies Izumi, she is blown away from the portal and her ritual ends in failure.
