[Extremely Long, Extremely Dangerous Event]

Scenario: You have been approached by Kitsu Izumi, the daimyo of the Kitsu family. Five years ago, during the War of Burned Wings, she used the Mirror of Sorrow to open a portal to Toshigoku in the center of Kyuden Asako, bringing a swift end to the castle’s defenders… and inadvertently creating a means by which the Steel Chrysanthemum could return to Rokugan with an army of vengeful spirits.

Izumi has no delusions about her role in the war that has engulfed the eastern coast of the Empire. She intends to travel to Kyuden Asako to close the Toshigoku portal, cutting the returned Hantei off from whatever reinforcements he might pull from that dread realm.

She is trying to find a small group of samurai who are willing to help her skirt around the Steel Chrysanthemum’s armies, reach Kyuden Asako, and then defend her as she attempts to close the portal she opened so many years ago. It’s a dangerous mission – even suicidal, she admits with resignation – but success will allow her to deal a significant blow to the Steel Chrysanthemum’s armies and also to make amends for what she views as the greatest failure of her life.

Participants: 5 characters

Imperialist Victory: If the portal is closed, the Steel Chrysanthemum is unable to draw more reinforcements out of its depths. Each surviving character gains +1.0 Glory, and the Empire gains +30 Imperialist Points.

Imperialist Bonus: If Kitsu Izumi survives the event, she vouches for each surviving character, effectively giving them the ability to train in a Lion school as if they possessed the Multiple Schools advantage. Characters who perish during the event are immortalized in the records of the Ikoma (while most of their less-than-savory deeds conveniently go unmentioned).

Traditionalist Victory: If the characters fail to close the portal, the Steel Chrysanthemum is able to draw more spirits from Toshigoku to reinforce his armies. The Empire gains +60 Traditionalist Points.

Traditionalist Bonus: If Kitsu Izumi does not reach the Toshigoku Portal, the Mirror of Sorrow falls into the hands of the Steel Chrysanthemum, who has no qualms about using it to open additional portals to Toshigoku across the Empire, effectively granting him the ability to replenish the strength of his armies at will. The Empire gains +100 Traditionalist Points.

Rules: This is a multi-part event that will take characters a great deal of time to complete. As such, participating characters will be unable to participate in any other threads taking place after this event until this event ends.

If you wish to join this suicide mission, post in this thread and prepare to depart Nikesake in the early afternoon.

Tani was armored and ready. Bisento ready, eyes focused and prepared for what was to happen next. This might be where she passed. But with some fortune, she would pass having done a great service to the Empire.

Chiyo was there - she could be nowhere else given the stakes.

She had written what letters she could and sent them to the corners of the Empire where they needed to go.

"Ohyao, Kitsu-sama," she said with a deep bow.

Though the mon of the Seppun was upon her breast, her robes were adorned with the golden lions of her youth, standing out starkly against the muted green of the Imperial families. Her eyes sparkled.

She looked to the Lion that had assembled.

"It is a fine day to stand in service to the Empire with the children of Akodo, Matsu, Kitsu, and Ikoma. May bushido light our path, and our ancestors guide our hands."

Touki had proven himself against the False Emperor. Now it was Setsuna's turn. Among the others, they simply stayed out of the limelight, more intent on getting the mission done than engaging in chatter.

Chiyo nodded to the Scorpion as they joined the assemblage of Lion.

"Bayushi-san," she said with a bow.

When she rose, she looked to Izumi and made eye contact. A second later she willed her lineage into action and felt her blood pulse in her veins, surging into her golden eyes which shimmered faintly. She cast them over the assembled group and saw their souls laid bare before her. When had finished assessing the others, she would turn her eyes back to Izumi, looking only if the daimyo acquiesced.

Homura, a smile on her face, walked alongside Tani. Armoured, with her daisho at her side and her no-dachi at her back. She almost had a skip in her step.

"If only it could stop raining..." she muttered to herself.

Part 1: Chase Scene

Kitsu Izumi has arranged for everyone to receive fast horses, as well as enough travel rations to sustain you during your mission.

The horses travel quickly across the frozen plains, their hooves kicking up half-melted snow and slush as you race northeast, skirting around the scouting parties of the Steel Chrysanthemum. There is little sense of order or discipline to the disorganized ranks of the spirit armies, but something seems to have them on high alert, for their scouts are roaming the plains in numbers far greater than what the Lion tacticians had anticipated.

You do your best to avoid the patrols, evading many of them asas Kitsu Izumi calls upon the kami to turn away the gaze of wandering spirits, but as you draw closer to Kyuden Asako, your luck finally runs out. A scouting patrol sends up a shout of warning, and all sense of stealth is cast aside as you push your horses into a hard run, attempting to outrun the scouts and leave the Hantei’s army behind you.

Rules: Each character must succeed at two TN 25 Horsemanship (Rokugani Pony)/Agility rolls. If a character is riding their own Gaijin Riding Horse or Utaku Steed, the emphasis on this roll changes to (Gaijin Riding Horse) or (Utaku Steed), as appropriate.

Each time a character fails one of these rolls, a mounted samurai from the Steel Chrysanthemum’s army manages to catch up to the character. The samurai makes an attack roll against the character, rolling 6k3 to attack and dealing 6k2 damage with a successful hit.

The character may then attack the samurai back while mounted; only one-handed weapons can be used for this attack. The samurai has an Armor TN of 20 and can suffer 20 damage before it topples from its horse, defeated. It does not use Void Points. If the samurai is defeated, the character can proceed to their next Horsemanship roll. If it is not defeated, the mounted samurai makes another attack against the character, ignoring wound penalties, going back and forth until either the character or the mounted samurai is defeated.

Alternatively, the samurai’s horse can be attacked; it has an Armor TN of 12 and can suffer 30 Health before it falls to the ground. Defeating the horse also defeats the samurai as it tumbles to the ground and is left behind.

Casting a spell from a scroll while riding a galloping horse is particularly difficult, and as such, all non-memorized spells cast in this way suffer a +10 TN penalty to their Spellcasting rolls. This penalty is applied before the TN penalty for opened Black Scrolls. If a character fails their Spellcasting Roll due to the Black Scroll penalty, they become sickened and cannot act for the appropriate number of rounds (though the samurai pursuing them continues to attack on its turn).

Characters who reach the Down or Out wound ranks (but who are not killed) fall from their horses and are captured by the Steel Chrysanthemum. They cannot participate further in this event.

After a character succeeds at both Horsemanship rolls, they escape their pursuers and can proceed to the next phase of this event.

"Horses. Oh, this'll be fun."

Homura managed to resist a sigh as she mounted Neighgisa, Neighisa sighing as it accepted the weight of another rude samurai. She didn't know why she put up with these samurai, they only wanted one thing and it was disgusting.

Hopefully horse Tengoku would be better once she finished her service. All horses go to Tengoku after all! Where the fields were lush, and full of wonderful tasty grass...oh the human was saying something. Wasn't this trot enough?

Suddenly, Neighgisa was faced with a terrifying sight; a pale white horse, with blood red eyes. It had accepted its place as this glowy humans mount, and wanted to take bites out of Neighgisa! This wasn't what she signed up for! She just wanted to have a nice relaxing evening with that Moto stallion. He was such a hunk, all the Mares had been flirting with him ever since he arrived... Neighgisa was startled back into reality with a clash of metals above her, as the two humans started a dance of death. The red-eyed horse snapped at her as well, and she danced back, which meant the glowy human missed striking her human, and her human put the finishing blow in that took down samurai and horse!

And that was it! Now Neighgisa could go back to the stables and prepare for a different mounting...oh, the human wanted to keep going. But red-eyed horses were scary! Neighgisa was resistant, and the human was really bad at convincing her, so again they began this dance with a new red-eyed horse. Why did horses even have red eyes? It was creepy on that white skin!

Again, the horse tried to bite her. Again Neighgisa danced away, and again her human (who apparently was good at something after all) killed the glowy human. This time they managed to break ranks, and Neighgisa and her human escaped the other red-eyed horses. Except this was the opposite way from the stabled...did the human know what she was doing?! This was insanity!!

....

After clearing the armies, Homura hopped off waiting for the others. Petting the horse.

"Good horse. I just wish you were smart enough to know what we had just faced."

Neighgisa glared. She knew. She would remember. She would expect a brushing when she got home.

Well, this was awkward. Setsuna was hoping to sneak by them instead. But the Lion were hardly known for being subtle, after all. Plus it didn't help that Setsuna WANTED to have a little bit of action.

"I am Bayushi Setsuna!" the Scorpion announced to the nearest one as he approached. The samurai swung, an easily dodged blow. Setsuna somehow tricked the horse into not seeing the really long razor coming for its head.

"Do you know Akodo Touki? I will -" A slash went through Setsuna's guard. Setsuna hissed and cut down the horse, back on their merry way.

Of course, that wasn't the only one. "Another challenger? Face me in honorable comb-" Setsuna said, dodging a slice narrowly before cutting the horse. "Would you let me finish? I'm trying -"

Stab.

Setsuna cut down the intrepid samurai (or at least his horse) who would not even let them finish speaking. For Lion ghosts, they sure weren't understanding the need for Setsuna to proclaim their glory.

Tani spurred her horse on, trying to get as much speed out of a creature that she's only ridden a few times. Unfortunately, the extra weight from her armor lags the creature just enough that a pair of patrol men catch up to her.

The first catches the side of her ribs. Tani manages just to twist her body so that the attack grazes, causing a nasty cut but little more. After a brief back and forth, she manages to smash into his chest, throwing him off his own horse. The second rides up and aims straight for her neck. She manages to duck the blow, driving her Katana into his leg and near tearing it off. He is fortunate that it is still there, but the impact still thrust him from his horse in short order.

Tani catches up to the rest of the group, nodding to them stoically as she prepares to move on.

Chiyo had never spent much time on horses - at least not in battle. Or evading battle. Or...well. Chiyo had never spent much time on horses.

One of her pursuers caught up and brought himself into range, striking out with a blow from his katana and slicing her. The blade bit deeply, and Chiyo gasped, but turned her gasp into a prayer. It was one she knew well.

The air kami around her remembered this dance and answered her call readily, springing to action and barreling towards the rider that pursued her. They smashed into him lightly tearing at his skin.

But they remembered their real purposes, laughing mirthfully as they drove him from him seat and sent him careening to the ground. A look of shock and horror crossed the rider's face. He had heard this story. He recognized this woman. She had subjected him to this tale in a winter court many years ago - before he passed. Pure rage lit his features as the kami carried him from his seat, a particularly vindictive one whispering into his air as it rushed past, "She prayed to the air kami...again!" He roared as he hit the ground and his horse careened off in a different direction.

But she wasn't out of the woods yet. Another of Toshigoku's hounds caught up to her and steered in close, lashing out with his katana. Another cut, slicing into her side, though not as deeply as the first had. She winced, but pressed on.

She knew. The air kami knew. The rider...he knew too.

Chiyo forced a mirthful smile.

"And then I moved..."

The rider screamed in defiance.

"And she prayed to the air kami!" the winds whispered as they sprang to life around her and hurled themselves into the rider, laughing the entire way and driving him off his horse and forcing him to the ground.

Chiyo turned her face forward and gave her thanks up to the wind.

"You have carried me before noble spirits - thank you for carrying me again."

Cold. Riding towards her likely death. There was much a sane woman could disagree with about her present situation.

And now being chased down by two assailants with murder in their eyes and a will bent to bringing her ride very much to a bloody end.

Kinuko rued not paying more attention to the art of riding horses, not that the curriculum at her school was particularly rigorous about it. Still, regret was a sin. So was unpreparedness, in the eye of Akodo anyway. One could be avoided. The other could be rectified in the future - if she lived.

But where speed failed, well, there were other lessons she did pay attention to.

Failing to keep up pace, the first samurai's blow struck home, wounding Kinuko as she turned in the saddle too late to avoid the attack but with enough time to cause the rider to overextend. Gritting her teeth, she struck out.

Perhaps in the future, an Ikoma would recounting would say Kinuko skillfully aimed her counterstrike. In reality, she got lucky and cut something important in the leg of the first assailant's horse, causing it to tumble, never to rise again.

There was no time to dwell on this small victory, as the second rider arrived to strike Kinuko. Their weapon was aimed so much the better and bite of it just felt all the worse. Twisting in the saddle, the rider lunged with their weapon at a fatal opening in Kinuko's defenses that simply wasn't there, allowing the Akodo to hack with some savagery at her enemy's mount, unhorsing them and leaving them behind.

Part 2: Kyuden Asako

After hours of hard riding with little rest, your speed bolstered by Izumi's prayers, you finally reach Kyuden Asako. The mountain fortress stands atop an outcrop of black rock that rises above the tree line. Though once beautiful, years of neglect and warfare have left the white walls surrounding the castle shattered and stained with grime.

As you make your way through the ruins of the surrounding village, Kitsu Izumi raises a hand, stopping the group. She stares up at the castle for a moment, then looks around you, concern etched in her young, weary features. “Something has agitated the spirits of the castle,” she whispers, her voice tense. “It’s coming.”

No sooner have the words left her mouth than a horrible roar of rage echoes through the village, shaking the half-collapsed buildings and forcing her hands to your ears. From every direction, spectral samurai begin to materialize from the air, each of them clutching katana and surrounding by a faintly glowing aura of crimson.

Kitsu Izumi steps backward, placing her at the center of the group. “They can sense the mirror! We have to fight them off and hurry to the portal!”

Imperialist Victory: Defeat 10 Toshigoku Spirits. Victorious characters at Crippled wound rank or above when the enemy is defeated each gain +.3 Glory.

Toshigoku Victory: Kitsu Izumi is reduced to the Out or Dead wound rank.

Rules: This is a combat thread. Characters should include their Initiative, Stance, and Armor TN in their first post; a character may not change their Stance on the first round of combat. If 30 minutes have passed since the last post and you do not show up as being online on the forum (and you have not contact the GM to let them know you are posting), your character’s actions will be ghosted by the GM to keep the event moving at a steady pace.

All characters being the battle surrounded, 20 feet from the enemy. For the purposes of this event, every participating character is assumed to be in melee. The exception is Kitsu Izumi, who is only assumed to be in melee if there are two or more characters at the Crippled wound rank or above.

The characters are surrounded; nobody can attempt to flee from this battle.

Tani gripped her polearm, ready to face the spirits. It was held distant, trying to keep them at length. Protecting Izumi was the most important play.

"Hah! Now we reach the exciting finale!"

Homura drew her nodachi as she looked back at Izumi.

"Hope you're ready for a party."

She looked back out at the spirits, a smirk on her face.

"Let's dance."

Neighgisa whined in the background. Homura assumed it was the horse cheering them on. It wasn't, Neighgisa was calling them idiots. The other horses agreed.

Setsuna stood with a casual stance, their jitte slightly concealed by their sleeve. The trick wouldn't last for long but perhaps it would help.

Still, the battle seemed almost boring to the Scorpion. It was missing the most important element of all.
