Degarashi placed a hand on his chest, feigning a hurt expression. "My word, Aya-sama, what a thing to say! If there were any less of me than my looks I'd be nothing at all!"

Aya laugned at that.

Aya wasn't sure what she'd done to deserve a personal performance, but she definitely appreciated it. The hour was late, and it made the march much easier.

"Well of course, it's what they're famous for." she agreed seriously. "Though I am curious, Degarashi-san, if you had your choice of court to perform in, which would you prefer the most?"

Degarashi let his arms fall back to his sides, considering the question. He hadn't really put much thought into the idea before, never having known anything of fame or success, and after even the slightest taste of it, he found that the desire for more was great.

But he also considered what he'd been through. Actors like Sara who, though talented, were full of self interest, or the Crane who frequently elevated art based on their own cryptic standards only to fellate themselves by explaining those new standards in great detail. The sheer mass of the question nearly stopped Degarashi dead in his tracks.

Then he thought about his performance earlier that day, and how it had felt taking the stage. It made him smile, and as he answered, perhaps some of the first hints of his true self became evident beneath his many masks.

"I should like to perform on the streets, Aya-sama, as I did today, plying my craft without care for those who listen. Mine is an art which should not be barricaded behind koku or court, brought up high to emperors and cast low to peasants. If I had but one desire, I would carry my craft across the empire, speaking only to those who would listen and praying to the fortunes that my words might touch those who need it most. The overlooked, the downtrodden, the weary." He looked pointedly away from Aya. "And those who can find no release from their pain."

It was silly, but Aya couldn't help be somewhat caught up in the actor's theatrics.

"Wherever there's a loudmouth talking over a performance, Degarashi-san will be there. Wherever there's an imperial princess in need of taking down a peg, Degarashi-san will be there...."she offers.

He laughed. "With my swift and decisive fan, ready to bruise noses and egos alike." This time there was a snort, and it looked as if it was almost painful for Degarashi to contain his laughter. "Did you... did you s-see the look... on Setsuna's face?!"

Seeing the performer struggling was amusing too.

"Wellll...I must admit Degarashi-san, I did not have the best seat in the house, and I WAS rather focused on the scheduled entertainment. You would have had a much better look than I. Was it something like this?"

She offered her dopiest, dumbest rube face, with tongue sticking out and everything.

What she lacked in talent, she made up for in sheer not giving a damn about etiquette.

Others might find Aya's behavior abrasive, but the freedom to be utterly irreverent, even for a short while, was very freeing. 'Good thing we're far away from our Lion pals, they might take offense that we're not quietly contemplating all the ways we could have died today."

Aya stuck her tongue back in.

"Been meeting alot of solemn Lions, Degarshi-san? A shame, the ones I have met have been most entertaining. Tani-san suggested an irmpious priest to me, and then tripped over herself apologizing to me, and Mogami-san asked what kind of romance pillowbooks I'm in to."

"Mmm, most of them I'm afraid. I met Mogami-sama briefly, then immediately caused a nervous meltdown by pretending to be Kendo-sama in the onsen. Nice view though." He coughed nervously. "I've met plenty of people so far, though. I even met a Crab that tried to help me feel better about my marriage conundrum and ended up comparing our traditions to horse breeding."

Aya grins a bit.

"I was rather amused that Lord Kendo was praising Mogami-san for her skill with the bow." she offered. "It seemed like something a 'clever' author would slip in to their story."

She looked thoughtful at the second part.

"Was she talking about horse breeding while you were in the onsen? I'll admit, I only saw your leg when Norikun was fondling it with great affection, but perhaps there is more to you than meets the eye in more than one way Dega-san." she offered suggestively, while shortening his name because her player decided that that was a good time for that, and totally not because they were tired of typing the full thing out.

Degarashi's player, on the other hand, browses mostly by phone and has it as part of the autofill list by now.

He cleared his throat, mostly ignoring the suggestive comment, though that didn't stop him blushing. "If that we true, Aya-sama, I'd at least have some manner of reputation by now, if only as an unseen beast stalking the night leaving unwitting maidens bedridden for days." He chuckled. "This happened not long ago. Yukarin-sama was helping pack my possessions while idly discussing the matter of my brother's betrothal versus my... lack of the same. She began offering suggestions before realizing that she, and all rokugani, treat the matter the same as horse breeders do, and she was having some difficulty doing so while looking right at the horse. Maybe that's why matchmakers spend so little time being personable."
