Most shugenja would have rushed to Noribaka's aid to invoke the water kami to try to keep him from you know, dying. She had one shot at this, and it wasn't going to be spent praying for mercy.

Instead she rushed at the Tsuno, drawing a ward from her sleeve.

Unfortunately, while it was quite engaged in finely slicing Norikun, it still had enough awareness to dodge the shugenja.

Well fuck that's not fair, I was just getting started.

He didn't so much feel the blade as know what happened to him by all the blood. At least it was sharp and he'd always been pretty tough.

Still, not being able to get back up and help Aya was pissing him off more than anything.

He wondered how the girls back at the geisha house along the road from Nihai Tower were. He wondered, if he managed to crawl back to Nikesake, would have a chat with Wasako again?

Naw. No one's ever cared much about Norikami anyway aside what he can kill for them. And that looked like it might be over now too.

The creature doesn't so much as glance at the waif of a woman waving a slip of paper at him. Instead, it stares down at Norikami and snorts in derision. "Weakling."

Lifting its blade, it brings it down on the bushi's midsection, cutting him in half.

(24 damage to Norikami.)

With that threat dispatched, it turns toward Aya, looming over her. Its lips pull back in a snarling grin, exposing rows of sharp teeth, and then it throws back its head and releases a powerful howl of victory.

Fear 5: At the beginning of combat, each character must test against Fear 5 (Willpower TN 30, character may add their Honor Rank to the total; those who fail suffer -5k0 on their rolls, and those that fail by 15 or more flee from the encounter).

Aya gritted her teeth when the beast let loose it's deafening howl. She could withstand this..she could overcome this....

19 vs. 30, Fail.

And then it sank in that Norikami was well and truly dead. He was an idiot, a lech, a loser, pond scum....but he wasn't supposed to die. He was too stupid to die.

She...couldn't beat it. She couldn't save him. She couldn't save her family, she couldn't save him. She couldn't avenge her family....she couldn't avenge him.

And something inside Aya just....broke.

And then she fucked right out of their as a complex action.

The monster's deep laughter hounds Aya as she flees from the ruined castle. The last thing she sees, glancing back, is the thing lifting up the upper half of Norikami above its head and feasting on his hanging entrails.

Traditionalist Victory: The characters fail to retrieve any of the Black Scrolls. The “Return of the Fallen Lord” Black Scroll will remain lost in Toshigoku for all time.

Traditionalist Bonus: The characters fail to defeat the Tsuno. Emboldened by their victory, more Tsuno will emerge from the depths of Toshigoku and join the Steel Chrysanthemum’s armies. The Empire gains +30 Traditionalist Points.
