"He always said anyone who fought alongside him, he owed a drink afterwards whether in this realm or the next one. Was there in the last fight." He shrugs the unarmed shoulder though he smiles a little in the matter of one used to taunting the trip to Meido. "I'd have traded the rest of me to have stopped that arrow, but it still doesn't erase a promise."

"You can call Reichin-no-kami many things and be accurate, but you'll never be close to the truth if you think he'd betray an oath made regarding Inari's gift."

Kioka smiles at the comment, a little mischievously.

"This one images she would have many messages for the kami. Since you were so kind as to deliver a letter for us, your message will also be passed along to Reichin-no-kami, if given the chance."

Kodama bows in thanks.

"No hurry needed, of course."

He turns and heads back in. Pretty certain there was another wooden case in there...and some scrolls at the back of a cabinet that he'd noticed on the first day of study.

"Yes, I hope heaven won't send you to that fate soon, sensei. Even if you became an oracle, I think your students here would miss talking with you daily." She chuckles. So does the crow, though it's difficult to tell whether it is rejecting this sentimentality or signing on to it. Or spotting a tasty moth.

"Is there anything you need here to weather the siege?"

"Thank you for your consideration, but the governor has promised me assistance when it can be spared. This one has no concerns."

She looks over everyone helping move the temple.

"Many come to the temple in search of something for themselves. So few come to truly give something to the temple, but the temple nevertheless gains by their presence. Now, in a time of need, many have showed up to give something to the temple. This one hopes that those gathered are gaining something by their presence."

She bows to those helping.

On his way back out, he returns the bow.

"Who knows. Maybe this is why I was so marked to come."

Myo-en casts Kodama a curious glance; this is the second time in their short acquaintance that he's hinted at an interesting past.

"I have gained many things from your temple, sensei," she says on her own behalf, dark eyes sweeping down to her hands for a moment, then up to the peak of the dragon-adorned roof. "A place to meditate away from the castle this winter. Shelter, in the last days. Wisdom about oracles and dragons, when I've not been too simple to receive it."

She chuckles. "A wise monk once reminded me very firmly that karma is not a ledger-book." She can still feel the icy-cold water hitting her in the face as she recalls that moment--though maybe it's just the last of the freezing rain she walked through outside, trickling down her coat collar. "Since then I try not to think in terms of assets and liabilities and debts. But in some sense I still think anything I can do to help here is only restoring some balance."

Having been focused elsewhere, on her aid to those yet here, Mai eventually approached the small group that had formed but as they were deeply into conversation she did not dream of interrupting.

Thus, she merely took up a space that she might glean what she can without causing anyone to suffer impropriety.
