The Lioness ignored the limping one and manoeuvred herself into a rotating attack against the one that seemed to be posing the greatest threat.

"MATSU!" She shouted to dispel the bad vibe the call was being given by the slaughter spirits.

The blow was on the mightier and crushier side, a testament to the power of the call.

Furious that they were now blatantly ignoring her as she struck them down, she stepped in to the path of the one looming over the fallen Akodo, jamming her blade into his armpit and twisting.

As the lifeless body fell from her blade, she ripped off her menpo and fixed the last of them with a cold stare, stating calmly, "When you return to hell, tell them Suzume Chihaya sent you."

As the Matsu raised her weapon, Chihaya stepped forward on the blood soaked snow and in a simple, elegant strike, brought her blade in a wide circle, taking the Lion's arms off at the elbows, and then removing her head.

Lowering her blade, she wiped it on the cloth of her himo, and then sheathed it.

Turning to the other lion standing she said, simply, "You fought well. Can you help me with your kinsman? I will help Kayou-sensei... I would not leave any bodies out here to these monsters."

Gesturing with one hand, she motioned for her unit of irregulars to come cover them as they returned to the city.

The forces of the Steel Chrysanthemum are routed and fall back, peppered by arrows from the archers on the gate. For the time being, at least, Toshi no Omoidoso has held.

Matsu Kōgyoku and Suzume Chihaya both gain +1.0 Glory.

Kōgyoku grabbed the true hero of the charge, Akodo Touki, and carried him back on her back like a good boring pack mule she could be. He deserved credit, not her. She was just adequate.

Time for contemplating the spiritual wounds from the encounter would come later. The mundane ones were just minor.

Moving to the monk's side, she was surprised to see she was... not as wounded as she first appeared. Indeed her strength seemed to be returning.

Glancing at the wounded Matsu, she said, simply, "I'm uninjured, I can carry Akodo-san to the morgue, if you can help Kayou-sensei."

Moving to the side of the Matsu, she looked closer, and then said, softly, "He lives. Let us take him to the healers... there is no time to spare."

It was a miracle he was alive at all.

Once she had been given some basic first aid, with the power of the Water Dragon coursing through her, Kayou levered herself back up with her naginada and moved to help those bringing the injured in.

She needed no praise for her actions, but was pleased to be able to tell others of the bravery of those she fought beside.

"Don't come between the Lion and their wounded, Suzume-san. Help the rest. We need to bring all who can be saved for treatment, and the rest for funeral pyres."

Kōgyoku replied without stopping.

Chihaya just shrugged, moving to help Kayou back inside the gates, hearing them close behind them with a most gratifying thud.

She nodded to the Matsu who was carrying the Akodo, and added, softly, "For a simple monk, you fought with a surprising fury of your own, Kayou-sensei."

"Domo, Suzume-sama," says Kayou. "Many things are worth fighting for, even dying for, the safety of the people is one of those."

"Hai, but it seems you were a mighty warrior in your own right, before you began your new life as Kayou."

A soft chuckle. "Perhaps you were a famous hero before you became a famous nun."

With a small shrug, she added, "Still, I was glad to fight beside you against such a foe - I have not seen such mindless fury before now. Even the Naga were nothing like that."

Kayou nods. "Though she has come to regret much of the war against the Naga, it seems that it was a misunderstanding that lead to war rather than true necessity."

"And no, this one just . . . was before becoming a nun," she says with a sad smile. "But she is happy that she has found her Tao."

"As am I. Your order, and your heroism, will serve as an inspiration toward honor, for the Suzume and Empire, I do suspect."

With a dry chuckle, she added, "Though I'm surprised... for a while it looked like you might be truly maimed, yet you seem to be less injured than I expected. Perhaps you have the favor of Bishamon, giving your body the strength to weather untold blows."

Kayou laughed. "Would you believe that it is the blessing of the Water Dragon that allow me quick recovery from injury? It is one of the techniques known among the Brotherhood as kiho."

"Though this one believes that Bishamon has lent her strength on more than one occasion."

"Indeed?"

She looked surprised.

"Would that I had time to learn such techniques, yet I suspect I would not be free to depart my duties for as long as such training must take."

Kōgyoku was in a tunnel vision; the physical task let her not to dwell too much on the enormity of what had occurred; she had some memories of her grandfather and they were now in so stark a collision with his reappeared form's behaviour that she couldn't reconcile those images outright. Her namesake from the 2nd century was unpleasant and strict, bot not without honour. Him, her own grandfather, reappeared as a... beast?

She was so deep in her thoughts that she didn't notice and attempts to attract her attention.
