He moved on quietly, the situation handled. He would have to share that story with Chidori, she would enjoy hearing it.

The magistrate finally decided to voice her own opinion on the matter the had been festering her since she had learned of the Emperor's assassination.

"In the unprecedented situation we should rely on the precedents, the honourable order for the Empire ingrained in the laws laid down by the prior Emperors. They do not allow for a succession of the late Emperor's murderer. This is... inadmissible."

She chose to finish as she had not been gaining audience, preoccupied by Unicorn shenanigans, and the mounting fury was running the risk of ejecting her voice level from quiet to indignant roar. She chose to sacrifice getting her point across. It had been got by many others. The court was not her element and she wouldn't risk compromising the Lion by ignoring this simple truth.

He shrugs at that. "But duty demands. I suspect that more than likely it wasn't all strictly necessary. I likely got boxed into a few things by courtiers that wanted to keep me from certain things. But I also learned quite a bit about the realities and will be far more prepared for such in the future."

"I can't claim I did much, but you're welcome. Court is a bit of an unusual place for me, to be honest, so I guess we're both a bit out of place here." Tsukimi chuckled briefly, looking around at the others.

... How weird it was that they all, herself included, fell so easily back into the habits of socialising. Perhaps it was a way to cope with what had happened. To process things. "... I hope your kin that were at the Emperor's Winter Court made out of it alright, Moto-san."

"That is my hope as well. But I imagine it will be slow going for a few more years yet. Being a brand new minor clan is a difficult position and we need to be wary of outside influences shaping us in ways that are counter to our duty. Anything like war among neighbors or decreased trade can be devastating to the growth of such a small clan I imagine."

In the aftermath of the rather heated debate on the floor of the court four perfectly serviceable origami animals were arranged on the floor in front of the Daidoji. A Lion, a Scorpion, a Tortoise, and a rather nicely stylized Naga.

Nodding in satisfaction she replaced the extra sheets of paper in her satchel. As expected, no-one was particularly interested in engaging a yojimbo in conversation. Sometimes she passed the time with other bodyguards, but she was just as happy to keep watch and make note of likely sources of future trouble.

Indeed, one of the returned Children of Shinjo, proud in purple, shouted like the wind of his Clan's following, horn sounding in the Lion court notes that others had surely blown before, as those attending gave heed. And the wind fluttered the leaves of the trees of those gathered, though how the branches shook might not always have been easy to see.

If they shook, though, they shook in increasing unison, a steady drum-beat to follow the horn-call, gaining in clarity and strength.

For my own part, being out of my depth--I have been a sea-borne Tortoise, after all, accustomed to a different swelling and pitching--I could but observe as those better versed in the ways of courts handled themselves, and, as I had been bidden by my better, I fixed as much as I could in my memory and in the work of my pen-hand.

And he presses on:

Quote:
Indeed, as we who were gathered there, those who had been in the city before and those who had fled to it that very morning, we began to realize that we would be at the front of such battle as would come. We began to realize that we would be the focus of an attack we were increasingly certain would come. And it would be at a poor time to endure such a thing, at the end of winter with the leaves not yet green here, with the stores of provisions nearing their end. For who could anticipate such a happening, such a usurpation of the order inherited from our ancestors--and occasioned by an ancestor.

But that occasion is what gave some pause. Others, more learned than I, might well think it thus that one returned from beyond--and an Emperor, no less--who acted so could not but be an emissary of the worlds beyond this. Some of those others might well think that a returned Emperor could not but act as the Heavens will. And that might be why it is that so much discussion had to follow.

All true samurai seek to serve the right, and they do it as their lords command. But when their lord can say no more, what then? Vengeance, yes, but against an Emperor? What true samurai could consider turning a hand against the blood of the Shining Prince?

Mirumoto Wasako was in attendance but probably a bit tardy to the party. She was dressed in a green hanfu from perhaps her mother's era, featuring some Dragon motifs on the embroidery of the silk. Her uncle didn't make mention that there was going a court here and yet she found herself in it. She looked about as she tried to get a sense of what was being talked about and the big hubbub. It didn't look like she was in a hurry to make an opinion and merely happy to observe.

(PM if approached please, thank you!)

Sugimoto stands as a particularly squat and un-moving rock for most of the debate, the only sign of life is the occasional slow blink whenever a samurai curses out another samurai....or a political figure...or a deity. So there were actually a lot of blinks so far that day.

He continues to turn over the issues in his mind, but always comes back to the simple issue that the emperor was dead. The emperor was dead. And he was dead because someone killed him.

The Lion grinds his teeth ever so slightly. Unacceptable

When he is permitted to speak the magistrate steps forward and projects his deep voice with the hint of a snarl.
"The Emperor is Rokugan, Rokugan is the Emperor. To do violence to the emperor is to attack the empire, to kill the emperor......is to savage the soul of our empire."
He sweeps a gaze over the collected samurai, some familiar, some not.
"This chaos is the result of one murder, the empire suffers. And the suffering will only end when the responsible are punished."
With a final nod, as if to himself, he retreats back to the crowd.

Equally not expecting much conversation, Rin sat just beside watching proceedings with a surprisingly serious face for once.

He doesn't approach, but the Scorpion surprisingly takes a gander at the mountain girl holding his gaze for some steady ten or so heart beats, and though he doesn't seem to mind if he's caught, he doesn't make a fuss either.

Eventually he goes back to the window to have a seat on the sill and took his pipe out again. He, like everyone in the entire Empire, had more things to worry about than all the pretty faces he'd seen at court.

With so many of his brethren speaking up, Touki realized it was time for him to do the same.

"I stand with the Lion." He said, his monotone voice growing louder, perhaps even gaining a touch of passion. "The Emperor was betrayed and murdered. His murderer must be brought to justice." He inclined his head, signaling an end to his speech, such as it was.

He'd never really had a way with words, but there was something to be said for unwavering support, anyway.

Despite giving her alternating gazes to everything and everyone around her, she happened to catch Norikami looking at her. She supposed she should make some conversation eventually.

Approaching Norikami at the window, she bowed politely. "Konnichiwa, Bayushi-san," she said as she gave him two looks to make sure she got that right. "This one is Mirumoto Wasako."

He returned the bow and gestured for her to stand opposite him at the window.

"Afternoon, Mirumoto-san. I am indeed of the Bayushi, name's Norikami. DId you come from Morikage Toshi or...from your clan's lands?"

Seeing as Norikami wanted to stay at the window, she didn't mind. She never considered there was a window seat to a court, considering how there were tables and dais present. "I've recently arrived just yesterday and I found myself a bit surprised by the tide people here. Unfortunately, I think the occasion is anything but joyous. Often events with Emperors involved are, or so I'm told."

It wasn't so much a window seat as him standing against the window sill so he could blow smoke out of a crack in it.

"What brought you this way?" he asked, inquisitive care in his tone. He didn't address the issue of court quite yet.
