"There are parts of the Suzume technique you can trace directly into the Kakita academy... in the fifth century."

They did form from Crane, after all, and lacking regular access to the academy... did not develop in the same ways...

"Then I shall have to make sure to encourage our niten duelists to brush up on their history as well." Iko responded in a tone that was only half serious, if drowned out a little by the pounding rain.

"It is heartening to see that the art persists and evolves in all lands. Even ones not well noted for it as you say. I imagine the service of Suzume Wara may have inspired a resurgence in its study in the Sparrow Hills?"

She nodded. "His skill in it far surpassed mine - I imagine he might even have countered your stroke in time."

A dark chuckle. "No matter the rumor, I saw his skill first hand. He was no pretender in Kakita's Art."

"I had the honor to meet and speak with Suzume-sama a few months before his death. His stance was almost beyond peer, and shows that the Crane do not quite have as complete a monopoly of The Art as they think."

"I hear that in the Emerald Championship that Kakita Seiko-sama won, most of the Empire's Clans had at least one duelist of note in the final stages."

"Sometimes greatness comes from unexpected quarters."

Perhaps a lesson for these unusual times.

"I can't speak for others, but I've had just enough...unexpected for a while. I think I'd be happy with a nice long stretch of boring." Iko half jokes in reply to Chihaya's comment.

"Those seven years away were just peaceful. A simpler life, hard work and hard training but easier for the clarity and calm of it all."

"Hai, I wouldn't mind a seven year break..."

A shrug. "But then, I'd be missing the opportunity to serve while I'm still somewhat fit and able - so I cannot complain too much."

With a faint shrug, she indicated, rather succinctly, that sometimes the universe was just like that.

Stepping back she allowed the rain to wash over her, cleansing her thoughts, as she went over the motions in her head, starting to have some ideas, training bearing fruit slowly.
