The Inquisitor’s Agent had some tea brought in and had sent word to the Phoenix delegation of an impromptu gathering. He was not worried about ceremony for now his main concerns were making sure people had the necessities. He said as the fire birds gathered, “This is a unique situation, so I will be brief, the Emperor is dead killed by an usurper and we have arrived here under less than ideal conditions. If you do not have lodging or lacking any key supplies, then make it known we can get that sorted.”

“If you somehow do not know who I am, Asako Kashiwagi, veteran and hero and at the moment just as bewildered as you are.”

Miwako arrived. She seemed a bit flustered as she entered, but composed herself quickly.

"My family was prepared to stay here for a week or so." Miwako explained. "We are fine for the moment. However, it would be dishonest for me to say I was not concerned by our situation."

Hachi arrived. He was leaning heavily on his staff, and puffing slightly, as though he had run all the way here, though no evidence of speed could be seen.

"I have been here for some months *huff,huff*, and am doing well enough, thank you."

*cough*

"The returned one broke hospitality? *cough* Not good. Not good at all."

For each of his coughs, he pulls out a square of cloth, and coughs into it, then stuffs it back into his left sleeve.

Tamaki was there with Yojimbo keeping watch in the background, though not concerned with any of his fellow Clansmen.

"Good morning samas. I am Asako Tamaki and that is Yojimbo." She indicates her yojimbo. "I was a researcher at the portal until recently. I am not surprised by the recent events though it grieves me deeply."

Footsteps paused a moment outside the door as Tomomi glanced in to see the marked lack of standing on ceremony. With that assessment in hand, she entered with a reasonable bow for greeting a mixed status group of one's clanmembers.

"Isawa Tomomi, of the Archives Hall of History, though most recently assigned to interviewing some of the returned in this province." The introduction was given with the measured alto of a courtier. "I heard the rumors with morning tea. With all we've lost this year, I hope there were not many of us left behind." There was a hint of question in her tone as she glanced to the newcomers to the castle.

Tamaki gets a more quizzical look. "Not surprised, Asako-san? What divination hinted at so immense a calamity?"

"All Phoenix I am aware of are accounted for," Kashiwagi said.

"I will meet with Shimizu-daimyo later, I expect all here will what they can to aid any refugees in need."

A very slight smile graces the older woman's face. "Of course we'll do all we can, even if it isn't *our* city anymore. I know those of already here have been asked to shift rooms in some cases as the rearrange to fit everyone. I'm sure the opportunity to do more will become apparent by and by."

Tamaki's words shift smile to frown. "Toshigoku? What has that realm to do with this?" Even as she asks, there are puzzle pieces shifting into place and her frown deepens in thought.

"Two Elemental Masters went into Kyuden Asako with many bushi. Only one Master survived, and Kyuden Asako was empty afterwards. Not long after a great spirit army arrived. I had been studying them. The spirits wouldn't just go home. They are spirits of slaughter. But could a powerful leader control them? I hadn't thought of that but I do think so now."

Tamaki sighs. "Everyone thought I was going crazy. That I had been overtaken by my studies and saw Toshigoku everywhere." Tamaki takes a sip of tea. Not bitter at all. "But I couldn't ignore the connection. It's why I couldn't get an invite to Winter Court this year. They thought I would cause commotion." And they would have been right. But still... 'I told you so' is solemn consolation.

His blue eyes closed upon hearing her words and then replied, “Continue your diligence and delve deeper into the mysteries of Toshigoku, Tamaki-san. We need every advantage we can muster.”

Tomomi sits heavily, not bothering to force stiff knees into a younger courtier's grace. "That...would explain some things..." she says quietly, reaching for a cup without really looking.

Still working it through, she adds. "I've interviewed a few of the ancestral spirits here. People who were walking around and watching the history can fill in blanks where scrolls were lost. But...it was...disturbing how much detail they could put into a description of battle, but how little they recalled about the amusements of courts they attended. I just thought...well, they're Lion, you know? Even in Yomi maybe they're more interested in the sound of intestines hitting mud than which haiku form was popular for moon viewing."

"It makes more sense if they're not really returned from Yomi."

Tamaki nods. "I will, Asako-sama."

She looks thoughtfully at the older Isawa. She hadn't thought of actually talking to one. She considered them much in the same way the Crab consider the Lost. Tainted. If by a different spiritual Realm. "That makes sense. I have tried to avoid them. I would be interested in hearing more about them. We should be prepared in case... well we should be prepared for anything."
