Kodama bows in return to the new Togashi's nod.

Is that three of them he's met now? Thought they were rarer then hen's teeth.

A slight shrug after he straightens, as he moves through his own basic katas. He seems to flow through the different elements, honoring each in turn.

It was an eclectic group to be sure, but Iko thought to take the most of the opportunity and approached Myo-en.

"Sister Togashi," she asked, at a point where she wouldn't be interrupting.

"Might this one impose upon you for a brief instruction in the unarmed arts?"

Somgai squints to see if asking for an 'unarmed' lesson in front of a one-armed man is a joke. When he sees it is not, he makes sure not to laugh.

"Hmm..." he says loudly. "Let's see." He tries a few chords. "Maybe something like this for a training piece?"

Myo-en's style is more consistent throughout, balancing flexibility with power (as far as one can tell from a slow warm-up kata, anyway). She watches Kodama out of the corner of her eye, part of her mind trying to discern whether his stance is the typical sort for other Brotherhood monks she's trained alongside.

Myo-en brings the next move in her sequence to a close before straightening up to a neutral stance and looking over at Iko with a small smile. "I didn't know you were interested, Iko-sama. I have always known you as a swordswoman."

If there was a play on words, intentional or otherwise, in her fellow Dragon's request, she doesn't seem to notice it.

"The day we stop learning, Sister, is the day we start dying." Iko replied as she clasped one fist in an open palm, as she'd seen her husband and other monks do, and offered Myo-en a bow.

Kodama's stance has been modified from the standard to allow for his lopsidedness, bringing more kicks and pushes from his legs than many others. He's of middling skill, but works carefully through what he does know.

"That is true." Myo-en smiles and returns Iko's bow. "Maybe Kodama-san will also join us? I am a student and not a teacher by nature... I can show, but those of the Brotherhood are often better at explaining things." She tilts her head and glances at Kodama inquisitively.

Iko looks over to where the monk is training and smiles politely.

Kodama looks up and does his best to not appear as a deer in lantern light.

"Oh, hai, if you would wish. Please understand that I attempt to cause no harm and so will focus on more defensive techniques. You will also learn more of kicking from me than most traditional jujitsu." He also tries not to babble as he approaches, bowing.

Iko follows along with whatever instruction is offered, trying her best to put Kodama at ease with conversation.

"So using this sliding front kick technique will give me greater reach than the standard side kick...?"

A quick nod, "Hai, though the standard is easier to balance in difficult terrain. Overextending yourself is also a danger if they're prepared for it, so you do not want to telegraph the movement."

A small pause, "If you use a few quick standard kicks you can also help keep your opponent further away, but not so far that the sliding front kick won't work. At the least, when you are not kicking an armored Hida."

Later, "Yes, the roundhouse kick delivers more power, but nearly any competent opponent will use your spin to push you off your balance and spoil the kick. It's an advanced technique that's better for an opponent who is either unaware or moving too slow to counter."

(OOC Caveat: I don't know anything about jujitsu in real life

After the travel from Toshi no Omoidoso to Nikesake, Iko was fatigued, so the lesson didn't last extremely long, but she managed to pick up a few pointers to start her education.

She continued to practice for a few more minutes before the exhaustion caught up with her and she needed a rest.

"Thank...you....minna-san..."

Myo-en, whose style is more grappling and fist-focused, follows Kodama's tips with respectful interest, while showing Iko a few basic strikes and--also important!-- some blocks and deflections she can do one- or two-handed.

"Thank you, Kodama-san. And Iko-san, for this opportunity." Myo-en grins at both of them and, in a generous spirit, at Somgai too. She's breathing only slightly harder and looks quite invigorated. "Kodama-san... would you try a sequence with me, perhaps? The last one-armed fighter I practiced much with used a very different style."

She hadn't thought about Turong in a while, and suddenly hopes he's doing well wherever he is...

A brief bow to them both, "Hai. I hope I can prove a suitable whetting stone for your skill, Togashi-sama." He says to Myo-en. To Iko, "Togashi-sama, I hope this helps. You stand with great strength in the art of the sword, may this improve the ground you stand upon at other times."

"Please call me Myo-en. There are two Togashi here, and only one holds rank," Myo-en says, still smiling. "What is your fancy? Grappling? Striking? Kata drill?"

((if you want to roll out a spar, it's probably fine, as long as we just don't confuse the Time Kami by rolling any damage?))

He bows a bit. "The water kami often appreciate when I do grappling, but I expect striking will be more important in the coming days."

Myo-en has to acknowledge the plausibility of that guess, and her smile goes a bit rueful as she does so. "You may be right, Kodama-san."

She bows respectfully, then drops into a low, comfortable-looking opening stance. Somehow the bamboo leaves appearing here and there among the complicated swirl of her tattoos appear a bit more numerous, or at least more prominent, than they did a few moments ago? It's hard to quantify.

Myo-en expects quick, lean Kodama to move in for the first sally and telegraphs some surprise when he doesn't. Slow off the mark as a result, she shifts to a higher stance and tests his guard--but her quick jab succeeds only in clipping the fabric of his clothing.
