"My appearance definitely took a few people by surprise. I ran into a few classmates from the Academy at Ryoko Owari, they couldn't believe it was me at first, so much older did I appear." Iko smiled fondly at the memory but there was a sadness to it as well as she recalled how it all ended up.

"As for many, that might be an overstatement, but there are definitely multiple. I was trained by a swordsman named Shune, but I noticed several others, though for the most part they are fairly solitary, or appeared to be while I was there at least. That could be because they normally dwell in Sakkaku though."

"Ah, I see."

She looked pensive. "That must have been a fantastical experience."

Nodding toward the garden, she added, "Do you suppose the tale of the Kenku in this garden is true?"

"It's possible to have happened in the past, certainly. However unlikely that the being still watches over the same patch, especially if it failed to find an acceptable protege on its last visit."

Iko brushes fingertips across the kenku feathers hanging from her saya.

"I hope to be proven wrong. Not for my sake, but I met a pair of samurai yesterday who I think could be inspired to greatness by just the appearance of such a majestic creature."

"Oh? I'd at least like to spar with one some day, see how it compares to a Naga."

She shrugged. "I feel like I've spent most of my career fighting non-humans - if it comes to battle with this spirit army, it will be strange to fight those of more human ability again."

"Not as physically strong, but much quicker on average." Iko offers a brief comparison. "Though using weapons we would consider more 'traditional' to samurai."

"I never hope for battle, and the loss of life it entails, I think that this foe shall see little mercy. Their time has passed already, we merely send them back to their rightful place."

"Hai, that we must."

With a small shrug of her shoulders, she examined the garden that surrounded them. I would not see such beauty torn down by those who have already had their time."

"The beauty of the natural world is a common casualty of the ugliness of war." Iko lamented as she took a sniff of one of the fragrant blossoms that had survived the Winter snows.

"But as the cold Winter crushes most of the garden only to see it rise again with the Spring, so shall it be with this. All things will pass, in time."

"Hai, yet I wish to avoid... subjecting the people to that - for a garden crushed may grow back, but never the same."

A soft sigh. "A family broken apart will not heal the same way - like a broken bone set and mended into a permanently... wrong form."

"Once broken, things are rarely the same." Iko agrees, with a heavy tone of sadness in her voice. "But sometimes, the fall of one can inspire the rise of thousands."

"Hai... and one hopes we do not have to put either theory to the test."

With a soft sigh, she gazed out over the serene beauty, and then fell quiet, seemingly lost in thought, or perhaps just out of things to say.

The two old campaigners sat in silence, as they enjoyed the tranquility if the garden.

It wasn't an opportunity that presented itself often to the women, one they took full advantage of, as the gentle breeze wafted the scents of the garden around them.
