Chiyo arrived at what she hoped was the right door. She didn't exactly have time to to keep looking.

She scratched with one hand. In her other, three letters - clasped tightly.

Ryuji was just getting ready for court when the scratch at the door came.

"Enter." he answered.

Chiyo entered and closed the door behind her swiftly. She gave a half-hearted bow - there was little time for such things now.

"Otomo-sama, forgive me - I came in a rush as soon as I heard you were here in the city. I needed someone I might trust-" she started, "Isoshi always spoke highly of you. I need your help."

It was an uncharacteristically pleading tone for her.

Ryuji took a more serious demeanor as Chiyo spoke. He had not seen her since she was married to his friend Seppun Isoshi. Her tone was clear that this was not about pleasantries.
He poured to cups of tea.

"Please join me Seppun-san." he said gesturing to the pillows at the tables. "What troubles you?"

She accepted the tea graciously and sipped subconsciously - as if she was acting by rote rather than intention.

"I...am leaving the city today. A mission, I suppose is the proper way to describe it. It will be very dangerous. I do not expect to return," she said matter-of-factly.

Ryuji's face did not react to her news. He maintained a perfect On though he was concerned for her.

"I see... Is this mission a sensitive one?"

She nodded.

"It is. If we are successful though...I expect you will know," she said, somewhat more reassuring.

"It is important. If we succee...when we succeed it will help the Empire. But Isoshi...Murasaki. I do not think I will see them again, Otomo-sama."

“Are you certain?”

"Iie - I am certain of very little in my life. My love for my daughter and my husband. My devotion to bushido. And a belief that when the samurai of the Empire work together, great evil can be overcome," she said - her voice like steel.

"Those things are my touchstones and it is in those things I place my faith."

Ryuji nodded.

"'In my sword, the wind. In my heart, courage. In my eyes, death...' My mother taught me those words from Kakita Morushijin's play 'No Man's Bride.' We are indeed samurai and it is our place to serve for the greater good and that service is unto death."

Ryuji paused to take a sip of tea.

"You and Isoshi-san are truly meant for one another. May the fortunes present me with an equal as you are to Isoshi-san. Beyond that, may the fortunes both guide and carry you. Is there anything you need me to do?"

She held out two letters.

"If you could ensure these reach their destinations. They are bound for the capital. Hopefully they will arrive ahead of the horde..."

Ryuji accepted the letters.

"I will make sure these reach their destination." Ryuji took a moment in thought then spoke again.

"I want you to know that if anything were to happen to either you or Isoshi-san, Murasaki-chan, will be cared for. I will personally see to that." Ryuji cleared his throat and straightened his shoulders.

"May your journey be successful, Seppun-san."
