Scenario: The forces of the Steel Chrysanthemum have reached Toshi no Omoidoso!

Unlike most of the enemies fought by the armies of Rokugan, the Hantei’s forces are not arrayed in any sort of formation or marching order. Screaming heimin race into battle alongside growling samurai, more akin to a frenzied mob than any sort of organized fighting force. Stranger still, the entire throng seems to glow with a faint red light.

The first line of defense against the Traditionalist forces is the archers arrayed on the city’s walls. Every enemy that falls to a well-placed arrow is one less enemy that must be fought off by the defenders at the gate.

Participants: Five characters.

Imperialist Victory:
If the Imperialist forces achieve 75 or more Kill Points, the enemy forces are weakened, which will make an easier fight for those defending the city’s gates. Every character participating in this event receives +1.0 Glory for their heroic defense of the city.

Imperialist Bonus: If the Imperialist forces achieve 125 or more Kill Points, the enemy forces are devastated. The battle at the city’s gates will not include any extra attacks from ashigaru opponents.

Traditionalist Victory: If the Imperialist forces achieve less than 75 Kill Points, the enemy forces make it to the city walls in good strength, requiring the gates' defenders to slay an increased number of Enraged Samurai to achieve victory. In addition, every character participating in this event is overwhelmed by enemies attempting to scale the wall and suffer 2k2 damage.

Traditionalist Bonus: If the Imperialist forces achieve less than 50 Kill Points, the enemy forces make it to the city’s walls at full strength. The battle at the city’s gates is skipped as the Hantei’s army destroys the weak defenses and surges into the city, slaughtering people at random. Every character in the game gains one disadvantage of their choice from the following list as they are injured in the fighting: Bad Eyesight (missing eye), Blind (missing both eyes), Dependent (relative of a fallen ally you swore to protect in the fighting), Lame (injured leg), Missing Limb (injured in the fighting), or Permanent Wound (injured in the fighting). Characters gain XP equal to half the amount of the chosen disadvantage (rounded up). The Steel Chrysanthemum captures Toshi no Omoidoso, providing his forces with a holding from which they can strike out at the surrounding area. The Empire gains +70 Traditionalist Points.

Rules: Each round, the enemy forces move closer to the gates. At each distance step, a character has one round to make attacks against the enemy. A bow can fire an arrow an additional distance up to twice its listed range, but it suffers a -1k0 penalty to the attack roll for every extra 50 feet (or portion thereof) beyond its listed range.

Because of the distance between the enemies and the characters defending the wall, melee weapons cannot be used in this event.

When the Distance Tracker reaches 0, the enemy has reached the gate and the archers are forced to spend the rest of the thread defending the walls from those who would climb over them, effectively ending their participation in this event.

Characters capable of casting spells can do so, provided that the army is within range of the spell. Each casting attempt takes the appropriate number of rounds. If a character fails their Spellcasting roll by the margin imposed by the opened Black Scrolls (i.e., if the Spellcasting roll fails because of the +6 TN penalty), then they have become so sickened that no further casting attempts can be made during this event.

The Traditionalist Army begins this event 600 feet away. At the end of each round, the army surges forward according to this table:
Code:
Round   Distance at start of Round (Ft.)
1          600
2          540
3          480
4          420
5          360
6          300
7          240
8          180
9          120
10         60
11         0  (no actions allowed on this round)

A character can make an attack against either an Ashigaru or a Samurai.

Ashigaru have an Armor TN of 15 and 5 Wounds. If a single attack deals enough damage to kill an Ashigaru, the character earns 1 Kill Point. If it does not, their target disappears into the crowd and cannot be targeted on future rounds.

Samurai have an Armor TN of 25 and 15 Wounds. If a single attack deals enough damage to kill a samurai, the character earns 5 Kill Points. If it does not, their target disappears into the crowd and cannot be targeted on future rounds.

Spells that have a wide area of effect will only hit Ashigaru; the samurai take cover and push the Ashigaru in front of any magical attack, using them as human shields. One Ashigaru can be affected per 5-foot square in the spell’s area of effect. Ask the GM if you have questions how many squares a particular spell will affect.

The Moto didn't much care for hiding behind stone walls. If it were up to him, they would abandon the castle and outflank the enemy on horseback, but Lion didn't fight that way and the Lords forbid the Lion do any battle tactic that isn't by the book.

So he found himself atop the city walls on foot like a stupid infantryman stringing his bow and getting ready for the onslaught. Fortunately, it looked like Steel Flower was just as hidebound in his battle tactics and was launching a frontal assault of all things.

Baatar grinned wickedly as he raised his bow and began picking his targets.

Mogami walks toward the wall with her two Budoka, sashimono fluttering on her back in the wind. Her hair and armor has small portions of ice on it, even having only walked from the Shiro to the gatehouse.

"Ready for another round of training? You two are doing good so far. The conscripted bowmen need much more work though. For them, I think the fright is too much to allow them to empty their minds, so we need to really focus on their form."

As she rounds a street corner, she sees the signs she hoped she wouldn't see for at least another day. Lion samurai hustling back and forth running supplies and getting into formations. Peasants being rushed away from the area and toward the west.

"Heaven's protect us, it has begun. Hurry! On the way up, grab a Yumi. It may be bigger than what you have practiced with, so take a moment to familiarize yourself with the new draw, but all the principals you know will still apply"

Her budoka nod and begin running to keep up with Mogami as she sprints through the gatehouse and to the top of the wall. She looks out over the frozen fields and steels herself.

"Stay by my side. Target their ashigaru. Remember, these are not people anymore, they are a violation of Heaven's will. Monsters who will show no remorse and who deserve no mercy."

She claps both of them on the shoulder and looks them in the eye.

"We will fight with all we have, and we will succeed. Be strong in your faith, for it will be what wins us this day."

Round 1: Mogami - Attack Stance

When in came to a battle, Osamu would much prefer being on a ship. Sadly he didn't have much choice in the waters today. Someone tried to hand him a bow as he climbed up onto the wall, but he waived them away and motioned to his scroll case.

Arriving he had a quick look around for someone he might no as he unfurled a scroll from his case. He wouldn't be useful in the battle for a little while yet. He could aide others in the meantime though.

(Holding Reversal of Fortunes)

When the call came for trained archers Tetsuko was somewhat surprised to find herself as one of the few samurai to step forward. An Iron Warrior was usually at home in the thick of a melee, but she had never been one to neglect her training in other areas. In fact her lord had gifted her a yumi to recognise her diligence in archery.

Still, compared to many Kakita she had known she was an average archer at best. So it was good to find herself in the company of Matsu Mogumi. The fact that she had started training others suggested more than just basic competence. The Unicorn were also known for their skill with the bow, and presumably the Mantis would ask the kami for their blessings.

As the red-tinged horde approached she nodded to the others on the wall and softly said "The arrow knows the way." before raising her bow and searching for her calm centre.

She only shot a bow properly that morning, but war was upon them and there was no time to wait. Holding her newly claimed bow and quiver, Homura stared out at the vast army with no fear whatsoever.

They were lead by the Great Matsu Mogami! And some Unicorn child who apparently was quite good as well when he wasn't being a foghorn.

She smirked at the others and said simply "time to shoot, mina-sama."

(Taking center stance for round 1).

The enemy were coming, and for the moment most of them were well out of reach of his spells. There were some here that could benefit from hsi help though. Casting his eyes over the crowd osf samurai he began to whiser his prayer to the Kami blessing each one in turn before turning his own gaze to the battle ahead. He didn't have much time to strike, but he made what he could of it. Casting a few spells into the mass of enemy troops and killing at least a few of them. Who knew how much it would help in the end though, as by the looks of it they were still ratehr sorely outnumbered.

As the enemy began to close with the city Tetsuko unleashed her first shot. It passed within a hair's breadth of one of the spirit samurai.

The Mantis approached her and called on the kami for aid before she could take her next shot. Perhaps they would be kind?

She reached for another arrow and focused, waiting for them to get closer. This time her aim was true yet the samurai somehow stumbled onward, she thought it was going to escape but at the last moment succumbed to its wounds

Her third shot went wide. The enemy approached.

Reaching deeply she calmed herself once more and killed three enemy samurai in quick succession. Hopefully it would be enough.

“Hold your fire! You’ll never hit at that range!” the Lion officer called.

“No, I can do it!” protested Moto Baatar. Raising his powerful horse bow, he aimed at the distant battle lines that had just barely come into sight.

The Unicorn’s first shot went wide, drawing laughter from the other archers. “I’m just getting the range,” Baatar snapped hotly, and drew his bowstring to his ear once more.

The Mantis, Osamu, gave him some encouraging words, and the young Unicorn resolved to make each shot count. Aim for the leaders, his archery teacher had said. Ignore the rabble. Baatar tried to pick out the samurai, men with swords or banners, and steel death flew from his bow.

They should break, Baatar told himself, but the enemy wave kept coming, fearlessly, trampling their own fallen beneath their feet. Someone handed him one of the infantry short bows as the enemy got closer, and Baatar forgot his pride and used the shorter, more maneuverable weapon - firing one arrow after another into the charging horde.

He only hoped it was enough.

Homura became deadly serious when it was go time. She was almost an entirely different person. Her focus became entirely on what was ahead of her.

The Lioness took a few moments to get used to her surroundings, and using a weapon she only learnt to use correctly that morning. However, Mogami's training combined with Homura's natural innate skills meant her shots were almost perfect every time.

The blessing from the Mantis certainly helped as well!

Mogami drew her bow and aimed high, loosing her first arrow. Far in the distance, one of the enemy ashigaru falls, the arrow lodged firmly into his chest.

Mogami's Budoka take their time holding their borrowed yumi, closing their eyes and whispering softly, feeling the presence of the bow, melding it into their own to make it an extension of themselves.

Again Mogami draws and releases an arrow, her movements slow and methodical, fluid like water. Another Ashigaru falls

Her Budoka step to the walls edge and draw, holding their shots as they try to infuse the arrow with their will.

The advancing army can be seen somewhat better, and Mogami knocks another arrow and lets it fly. It streaks through the rain and hits a crazed Ashigaru in the eye, dropping him in a pool of gore and blood.

Finally, her budoka both let out their breath at the same time, and two more Ashigaru fall.

The enemy not stopping their advance, Mogami doesn't stop her fire. Another ashigaru brought down.

Tsuruga and Fuwa draw in their will again, getting used to their new Yumi, both men are calm and collected, almost the image of a samurai.

"Good, keep your rhythm"

Mogami tells her men and knocks two arrows on her bow this time, the enemy now at a reasonable distance. She releases and both arrows streak through the sky, splitting at the last moment to hit both an ashigaru and a returned samurai, laying them both into the frozen ground, red blood staining the white snow.

Her budoka keep to simple matters however and stick to what they know, a slow, steady rhythm of a highly ritualized practice. Two more arrows sink into ashigaru flesh, ending their lives for a second time.

Another two arrows at once for Mogami, another Ashigaru samurai pair down.

Feeling confident in their ability, Tsuruga and Fuwa match their commander, downing two more bodies.

Only once does Mogami miss her mark, the double arrows flying wild, and of the targets she hit, only one got back up to continue the charge.

Her men were equally impressive, with Fuwa only missing once, Tsuruga landing his shots each time.

At the call from another commander, Mogami closes her eyes and takes a deep breath, sudden fatigue crossing over all of her features. She squats down on the wall, leaning on her bow a little and breathing hard.

"You...You have made me proud this day." she says to her budoka. At the praise, they bow and step to her sides, keeping her sheltered as she regained her strength.

"We have done all we can, now it is the duty of those on the ground to show the strength of their steel."

When she finally opens her eyes, she seems Homura standing on the wall with a bow in her hand. Mogami's cheeks turn bright red and her eyes light up. She smiles openly at the woman.

"You honor me, Homura-chan...Thank you."
she whispers

As she moves into position the guard the gates. Kayou catches Mogami's eyes, and nods, silently making her approval known. She gives a salute just before she passes out of view.

Homura catches the gaze out of the corner of her eye and looks at Mogami. For the briefest moment she smirked, whispering "see, expert" before she looked back out. As much as she wanted to stand and be smug, the fighting continued, and she needed to be ready to jump in at a moments notice.

They had done what they could, but the rest was in the hands of others as the army reached the cities gates. Casting his gaze around he crowd, Osamu moved back from the wall to let any archers that were able to take his place. The spell casting had left him rather exhausted, and it should be the last he did for the time being. He might be needed later that evening to aide with the wounded after all.

If that is they managed to drive away their ttackers.

"Thank you for your prayers Mantis-sama." She looked down at the melee below, wishing she could join. "We have done everything we can, this battle is in the hands of others now."

With a nod to the shugenja she added: "This one is Daidoji Tetsuko. It was an honour to fight alongside you, all of you minna-sama." A bow was offered to the group before she unstrung her yumi and replaced it in its clip.

The Steel Chrysanthemum's forces are weakened, and with a valiant defense at the gates, their morale is broken and they fall back, buying the city time to prepare.

Moto Baatar, Matsu Mogami, Osamu, Daidoji Tetsuko, and Ikoma Homura each gain +1.0 Glory!

Mogami gives a bow as well.

"Indeed, it was an honor fighting next to all of you. Between our work and the gat defenders, it seems we have broken them."

She rotates one of her shoulders to ease the soreness of a heavily worked muscle.

"How many do you think we all put down?"

"Not nearly enough" Homura said, motioning out further "there's far more of them. We have driven these forces back for now, but they will return also."

Homura turned to the others, with a smile and a bow.

"It has been an honour and a privilege serving with you all. I hope we can all stand together again in the future. I am Ikoma Homura."

"Good shooting, all," the Unicorn archer said as well. "Hopefully that will thin them out enough to give our people at the gate a fighting chance."

"I'm Moto Baatar," he added, as introductions were made.
