The first of the refugees from Morikage Toshi - samurai, heimin, and eta alike - from begin stumbling into Toshi no Omoidoso, cold, miserable, and in many cases, frostbitten. The surprised guards send word for healers to tend to the wounded and for administrators to find someplace for the refugees to stay that is out of the cold.

When she heard of the need for healers, Miwako quickly made her way to the gates to assist anyone in need. Her medicine kit and scroll satchel were ready for whatever might be needed.

Tani tried her best to look calm and collected as she led a small contingent of courtiers and her own bushi to the city. Her expression told it all, though. She was angry. Angry at having to march in the snow with inexperienced troops. Angry at having to fight what should have been Honored Ancestors. Angry at not having been there to support the Emperor in his time of need, however unrealistic that hope might have been.

She saluted the guards as she saw them, leaning just enough on her bisento to indicate that she probably had some small injury or other. Mostly she was just tired. And Angry. Very angry.

Ren was among the first... if not the first of people out at the gates helping people get situated. She ran back and forth carrying messages and guiding people to healers while making sure that all, both high and low, were being treated with respect.

Thank. The. Kami.

Homura wasn't one to complain about too much walking, but this situation was one where complaining was both understandable and not one to word. As part of the Lion who were escorting the large gathering of high status (and somewhat snobby) guests, she moved to approached the guards but allowed her superiors to report. Only bowing deeply and adding her points before turning back to the guests.

"I'm not sure some of them would have lasted another day" she quietly whispered to Tani.

A lithe, slim figure dressed in black was shivering in the cold, despite the meager sun in the air.

Her teeth were chattering, and her skin was red from the frost. She let out a sigh, and glanced around in the city, letting out a slow, frosty breath she wasn't aware she was holding back.

"Thankfully they didn't have to. I do not know that any of us would have lasted if the nearest Lion city was not this one. A force ill prepared and under-equipped to march, but we did well enough under the circumstances." She spoke in return to Homura, not bothering to whisper.

Kashiwagi was in good spirits, he had to be an example to those of lower station and so he would play the part. Plus, it is what Chidori would do, or so he imagined, smile in public and gripe in private to him… for hours, an enjoyable past time that was much more soothing that it sounded.

He announced himself on behalf of the Phoenix delegation and made sure that his people had places to stay before tending to his own needs. He was famous after all, he knew he would be well received and taken care of, or their superiors would receive a stern letter.

Seitouna had been uncharacteristically out and about so early in the day, but, when he hears the commotion, he recalls his lessons and heads towards it to see what can be done.

Seeing the stream of refugees come in, he sees about steering one of the servant-types aside to talk for a moment.

"Come on, then," he says, "tell me, what did you see? What happened? And we'll see if we can't get you some food and fire, eh?"

His voice is reasonably warm, reasonably comforting, but what result it will have (https://orokos.com/roll/796635) is unclear.

"What happened? Are there many wounded?" Miwako looked around, trying to quickly assess the needs of the arriving group.

"We need to get everyone out of the cold. Get some food and tea." she made suggestions. "I'll start treating the most serious injuries."

A small young man on a tall horse was riding along the column of refugees and noted Sara's apparent distress.

"Ho there!" he called to her. "It's not much further to the castle. Could you use a ride? I'm called Moto Baatar."

Samurai were not the only subjects of the empire that had been caught up in the mess. On his heels, a heimin boy in his early teens followed close behind on his orders, while kin carried what seemed to be a young girl that couldn't have been more than a handful of years old. All of them looked quite ragged and worn out.

Locating the nearest peasant adult that he could find, he explained the childrens' unfortunate situation, asked them to take care of the children as though they were their own, and handed them all the rations that he had in his pack as well as a few bu to help to take care of them.

Secretly, he was thankful for the shared warmth of the child during the cold trip. He hadn't had time to collect any warm weather coverings and was quite freezing. But he collected himself and looked around at the others coming in to see if he might be able to assist with anything before someone figured out his position and rank, giving him a cup of hot tea and a blanket.

While he appreciated the concern and assistance, he refused to leave the others that were in also in need for the moment.

Ren was called out by a superior and came running to the Phoenix's gathering point. She caught the flash of the Asako Mons on so many chests and backs and turned to her attendants and immediately began pointing out places and giving orders.

Walking up to the head of the delegation she paused for a moment as a look of relief filled her eyes.

"Most Honorable cousin... We are so glad you have arrived. What is of greatest need?"

"Several, Isawa-sama," Tani bowed to the Isawa in her response. "An attack on the Winter Court. The Emperor has been slain." She took a breath before she continued. "We can provide more details inside."

A figure stands to the side - a recent arrival, some may recognize, but not a refugee - and watches the line of those fleeing Morikage Toshi with an expression approximating sad disappointment.

"How did we ever let it come to this?" he asks no one in particular, shaking his head.

Seeing another Scorpion in the line, Sukekage steps forward, grabbing something - anything - nearby that could be offered for warmth.

"Would that we met under better circumstances," he says with a bow, "but Fate is what it is. I am Bayushi Sukekage, one sent to assist those arriving from...well, new arrivals."

He couldn't bring himself to even say it, yet - every fiber of Sukekage's being revolted at the thought of what they were fleeing.

Shivering in the cold air and supporting a Lion courtier half-wrapped in bandages, Doji Koushi shuffles toward the forefront of the group and bows, helping the exhausted courtier to do the same.

"My apologies, Isawa-sama, Matsu-sama. Ikoma-sama is in need of a place to warm himself."

Here, he glances significantly at the bandages, already in need of a change. For his part, the Ikoma looked ready to lapse into unconsciousness.

Following close behind Matsu Tani, Mogami and two rather well kept and armed Budoka stand next to the Nikutai. Mogami listens as Tani answers questions but keeps her eyes away from the city, her Yumi in hand, watching over the cold land for signs of any approaching adversaries.

He nodded and said, “Honored Cousin, there are many that need succor, thankfully most should be well enough.”

He singled out some of the elderly and those with illness that could use immediate attention. He added, “At least we can get thee people shelter.”

I wasn't even supposed to be here...

Kasuga Asakuro, Imperial Peafowl Supervisor, was indeed not meant to have been on these roads fleeing for his life. A late replacement for another member of the Tortoise delegation attending Winter Court that had a most pressing internal clan matter to attend to instead, he had been content to spend the winter back home tending to his favorite fish and squawking birds at the Imperial Menagerie right up until the fortunate (perhaps now unfortunate) day his orders and travel papers were delivered; instead, here he now was, trudging through the snow, a traveling pack already light from the last-minute packing job he did to get to court before the snow fell, now made even lighter by a few of the non-essential things he left behind in his haste to pack and flee the terror of Morikage Toshi.

He pulled his traveling cloak ever tighter around himself as the city gates came into view. Nodding in satisfaction that he was in good health from the journey, he approached the gate where those already in the city already appeared to be streaming out to help those in need. The Tortoise did not yet cross the gates into the city itself; he instead milled about outside of it, as did some others it appeared, to check on those that had also fled the terror and horror some time ago.

"It is as Matsu-san describes, Isawa-san," the Tortoise offered with a respectful bow. "There are some injured in attack, whereas some others are succumbing to frostbite and other ailments from the cold. There are still quite a number of coming around the bend in the road, but how many and in what conditions they are all in I could not say."

Sara looked up....and up. Is that an animal or a naga?!

"Ah, greetings Moto-san." She replied with lips red not from make up but from the cold "Shosuro Sara, of the esteemed Taishoku Hikari troupe. I..." she eyed the beast. "I would gladly accept. Walking in the snow is not my forte."
