Kakokuna Ressun Garden - or "Harsh Lesson Garden" - is so named due to the appearance of a Kenku swordsman in Toshi no Omoidoso some ninety years ago. According to the story, the Kenku issues an open challenge to the samurai of the village, promising to train any who could defeat it in combat. Though many Phoenix samurai challenged the Kenku, none were able to overcome it. After a week of waiting for the worthy student, the bird-duelist left in disappointment.

Shiba Yuumo, one of the Kenku's defeated opponents, built the garden after the Kenku's departure in the hopes that it might one day return to challenge him. Despite spending the rest of his life training with the blade, Yuumo never again saw the Kenku.

While the city was under Phoenix control, the garden was a popular place for young bushi to train, many of them secretly hoping that the Kenku was studying their technique in preparation for a test. The practice is less common among the Lion, who regard the story as nothing more than some interesting history attached to an otherwise pleasant garden.
