Post subject: | EVENT: Fake News? [D1, Early Afternoon] |
Scenario: Word of the Emperor’s assassination by his ancestor, the so-called Steel Chrysanthemum, has reached the court of Toshi no Omoidoso. The final days of court, typically reserved for finishing the last few details of trade negotiations, have collapsed into utter chaos. While nobody is denying that the assassination of the Emperor is a terrible crime, some of those in the court believe that, in light of the situation, Hantei XVI is currently the rightful Emperor of Rokugan. Unlike the Emperor’s widow, Hantei Tokiyo, the Steel Chrysanthemum was once recognized as the rightful Emperor of Rokugan, and his return to life (and thus, his position as Emperor) must have been endorsed by the heavens. It is an unprecedented scenario, and similar arguments are surely playing out in courts across the Empire. Will the courts choose to place the Empire under the heel of an unstable tyrant in the name of tradition, or will they allow control of the Empire to pass into the hands of a former Lion? Participants: Four characters. Imperialist Victory: If the debate ends with more Imperialist Points than Traditionalist Points, then the court sides with Hantei Tokiyo and decries the bloodthirsty actions of the Steel Chrysanthemum. Imperialist players gain +.5 Glory, while the Traditionalist players are scorned and have .5 of their Glory converted into .5 Infamy. All Imperialist and Traditionalist Points are added to the Empire’s total. The points count as points earned by the character. Imperialist Bonus: If there are at least twice as many Imperialist Points as Traditionalist Points, then the Traditionalist players are mocked and decried as traitors. Each such player gains the “Social Disadvantage” disadvantage. Traditionalist Victory: If the debate ends with more Traditionalist Points than Imperialist Points, then the court sides with Hantei XVI over the pretender Empress and her pro-Lion sensibilities. Traditionalist players gain +.5 Glory, while the Imperialist players are scorned and have .5 of their Glory converted into .5 Infamy. All Imperialist and Traditionalist Points are added to the Empire’s total. These count as points earned by the character. Traditionalist Bonus: If there are at least twice as many Traditionalist Points as Imperialist Points, then the Imperialist players are mocked and decried as traitors. Each such player gains the “Social Disadvantage” disadvantage. Rules: This event has three steps that each character must attempt. Because this is a formal court event, no spellcasting or kiho can be used during this event. A character can attempt to argue an “Imperialist” position that supports Hantei Tokiyo, the Emperor’s widow, or a “Traditionalist” position that supports Hantei XVI. Imperialist supporters will earn Imperialist Points, while Traditionalist supporters will earn Traditionalist Points. Both types are referred to as “Discussion Points” below. Please state which side of the argument you will be taking in the comments section of your dice rolling. Historical Precedent:
If a character fails this roll, they end up accidentally providing supporting arguments for their opponents. The opposing position gains 1 Discussion Point, plus 1 Discussion Point per failed Raise. Passionate Debate:
If the character fails this roll, their impassioned argument is weak and is torn to shreds by the opposition, making them look foolish. The opposing position gains 1 Discussion Point, plus 1 Discussion Point per failed Raise. You Fools!:
On a failure, the character loses their cool and begins shouting, bickering, and fighting with their opponents. Hair is pulled, fans are snapped, and faces are slapped. The character loses Honor for “Breach of Etiquette, Major.” If the character has the Brash disadvantage, they attack and kill or more of their (NPC) opponents, resulting in the honor loss changing to “Breach of Etiquette, Blasphemous,” and they gain +.5 Infamy and either the Black Sheep disadvantage (if a samurai) or the Cast Out disadvantage (if a monk). |

Imperialist Now I understand the term herding cats. The chaos of the courtroom was shocking. It ranked up there with a Hida party where someone forgot to delivery the sake "Mina-sama, calm down" Homura spoke in a firm tone, before stepping forward. "As we know, the succession is inherited to the eldest son, or daughter in the case of no son. We are faced with an unprecedented situation in that Hantei the XVI walks among us again, however the again is the key point. As per the rules of succession, his Son Hantei the XVII once of correct age took his position after he passed. Hantei XVI walking among us again may have been a blessing, but his time has still passed, and to commit a heinous act in a peaceful place such as a courtroom does him no favours." Homura looked around, politely ignoring the insults coming her way. "It is clear; Hantei Tokiyo should rule as regent until the child is old enough to take their place on the throne." Homura took a step back. Keeping a polite smile and letting the insults wash over her. Seriously Doji-chan, you're calling me a whore? You're pregnant and your husband can't keep it up long enough to impregnate a Geisha in heat, let alone you. Imperialist Sara wasn't shaking like a leaf anymore, now that she was back to...well, not civilization exactly, but close enough. She put on some make up, put up her mask, and attended court, as befitting one of her station and fame. Court was a mess. People yelling and suggesting...no, proposing, that Hantei XVI is Emperor now?! Now hold on there. "Minna-sama, if I may...I recall something that might be of relevance here. Now, if you are familiar with the play...hm, how did it go? Oh yes. The play was called Duty's Price. It was based on a historical precedent from Hantei VIII, whose father has passed at an early age due to an unfortunate hunting accident. His mother, a doting Doji, of course, would raise him and rule as Empress-Regent until his age. In the play, the dead father haunted the son, and even the Hidden Guard could see him. Now, if a mere Kakita play sees the truth of the matter, why do you refuse to do so?" She ignored the insults hurled at her - traitor, coward, snob - but she resented one. "Sama, I do not have bad taste in art, thank you very much." The Shakanar 'stood' before the court, listening to the debates, remembering the stories he had gathered about the Empire of the humans, before stepping into them. There was a slight stir, as this...thing, was not human, but he spoke with a strong impassioned voice. "Minna-sama, there is no precedent for that which you argue. Hantei the XVI died. He passed beyond the mortal shell. Unlike the Naga, your leaders do not return. While you may seek out your ancestors for wisdom, it is not in the norm that they live again with their full memories. Instead, your History, your Law, points out that to the eldest son does the throne go. But he is still but a babe in arms. Let his mother, she who has sat at the side of the emperor, may he find peace in the afterlife, rule in his stead. When he is grown, and the heavens have bestowed upon him the full might of their blessing, then he can take the throne, and rule as the heavens and your laws decree." The debate continued for some time, and he showed adept skill at turning others arguments against them, letting their passions or their doubts lead them into his verbal traps. And when things turned ugly, as they often did in such impassioned debates, he was as a stone in the river, letting the insults flow past him, the very soul of courtesy, for all that he was not Rokugani. When it is Asakuro's turn to stand before the court, the Tortoise began with what could be at best a "slight" but at worst a substantial misreading of the historical texts that he had reviewed in the past - it had been some time since he had paged through one, however, and when certain eyes looked at him from across the room with fans raised it was clear to him that "reading a few books every now and again" did not a historian make. Though momentarily tripped up in his misunderstanding of the historical events of the past, he rolled with the point he intended to make overall and attempted to deliver a passionate speech as to why, despite his earlier misstatements, those in the room should rally around the Dear Empress and that the events that occurred at Winter Court would make themselves more clear in the coming days as to why, though the Steel Chrysanthemum was of Hantei by birth, by name, and by former reign, it could not be He whom now walked through Rokugan that should take the throne. Just as he is wrapping up his rhetorical argument, however, some minor court functionary confronts him on the point he made earlier. Asakuro accused them of ignoring his overall argument to nit-pick his minor slip-up in historical interpretation, and soon the argument turned heated enough that it erupted soon thereafter into a fanciful flight of unfurrowing fans - any by that, of course, it was really a near slapfight that led both to walk away fuming and cursing the others' name under their breath. Today was just not his best day in the oratory circles, unfortunately. But at least he was passionate about what he meant! Just a little... too passionate.
