Scene Theme

Kashiwagi sat under an overhand contemplating the heavy rain with a straw coat and hat to stay dry. It was a good place to recall what had been lost and travel down memory lane.

Here he waited.

With a gust of cold and wet wind there was another person standing nearby.

“Wonderful weather we’re having today... Wouldn’t you say, cousin?”

"Indeed," he mused darkly. "How are you, honored cousin."

“As well as one could be under the circumstances.” She paused.

“And you? Couldn’t have been an easy few days.”

"I am surviving, is your husband here?" He asked.

She shook her head. “He is back home with our son. I’ve been here for the past month on an assignment... I assume Chidori stayed home, seeing she is with child.”

“Yes, I was thankful after the fact but she is now safe or as safe as any of us with that monster leading his slaughter spirits across the Empire,” he replied.

“If the Lion fail us, you will be the first one I will haunt.”

“I guess in one sense that makes me first in your heart. Thank you for the prestigious position.” She said with a chuckle.

“I’ll take it if it means I can survive another onslaught from Toshigoku’s champion’s armies.”

"I am not sure if I should feel offended or not."

At the mention of the spirits he said, "Have you faced them before?"

She tilted, “Faced? I suppose one could call it that. I was there at Kyuden Asako... on the outskirts. One of maybe only a handful to escape alive.”

"I meant recently," he said wearily, "But yes that is a thing too, and your vaunted leader has the mirror and seems determined to fix this on her own. Best of luck to her and the Lion."

She nodded, “I fear she will fail... miserably. She is not well... anyone can see it. The mirror appears to be reflecting into her own soul if I were to take a guess. Not unlike you and your exploits with the spear.”

She popped her neck, “If only her failures would be as amusing as your spear-driven escapades.”

"When someone has failed as spectacularly as she has, the drive to fix their failing is equally as strong. I do not envy her burden, even if they are self inflicted," he said dismissively.

She nodded, “As it is written...‘You are always blind to your truest enemy... for they are behind your eyes.’”

She let out a breath, “Do you remember when the neighbor girl went out to the woods and brought back some poisonous mushrooms for her family’s soup the next day...?”

"Vaguely," he said looking at her for the meaning of this side trek.

“Do you remember how upset she was the next morning when she awoke and found her mushrooms missing?” She asked.

"I wish I could tell you what I had for breakfast yesterday, dear cousin, you're going to have to tell me the story as I do not recall this in much detail other then a general idea of it occurring," he said honestly.

She chuckled, “I snuck in and threw the mushrooms out that night... to protect the girl and her family from her ignorance...”

"People tend to get angry when you act on their behalf without their consent to save them," he said with a smile.

"No good deed goes unpunished."

“So... you have any idea how to get rid of Toshigoku’s mushrooms?” She asked.
