Post subject:  Influence Rolls

During this game, the Empire will gain both Traditionalist Points and
Imperialist Points, which represents the strength of Hantei XVI's and Hantei Tokiyo's respective claims to the throne.

The majority of Traditionalist Points and Imperialist Points will be earned as a result of events that take place during this game. Event outcomes that favor Hantei XVI, the Steel Chrysanthemum, will award Traditionalist Points, while event outcomes that favor Hantei Tokiyo will award Imperialist Points.

Influence Rolls
Characters may also attempt to earn Traditionalist Points and
Imperialist Points by speaking out in public in support of either Hantei.

Threads in which characters can speak out in this way will be specifically noted as such and listed in the daily Weather announcements; while character can speak of their support for either Hantei in other threads, they cannot attempt to gain Traditionalist Points and Imperialist Points in non-authorized threads. Some authorized threads may have restrictions on which characters can join them, in which case, those restrictions will be made clear in the first post of that thread.

In an authorized thread, a character can attempt a TN 15 Courtier (Rhetoric)/Awareness roll. On a success, the character earns their choice of either 1 Traditionalist Point or 1 Imperialist Point, plus one additional point for each successful Raise. A character can only make one such influence attempt per thread.

The Fate of the Empire
At the conclusion of the game, the number of Traditionalist Points and
Imperialist Points will be compared to each other to determine the fate of the Empire.

Traditionalist Points 75+ greater than Imperialist Points
Hantei XVI captures the Imperial Heir and uses him as leverage to force Hantei Tokiyo to admit that the child is illegitimate and not the true heir in exchange for his safety. After the admission, the Steel Chrysanthemum orders both of their deaths and assumes the throne under the premise of being the only "true" Hantei left in Rokugan. The Clans are shocked by the Steel Chrysanthemum's brutality and the loss of the Imperial family, and the new Emperor manipulates that shock to seize power and cement his rule over Rokugan.

In addition, the character who has earned the most Traditionalist Points during the game is rewarded with their own Minor Clan. The character with the most Imperialist Points, meanwhile, is arrested as a traitor; the character and their family are executed as traitors, and their Family is stripped of their name as punishment.

Traditionalist Points 40+ greater than Imperialist Points
Hantei XVI captures Hantei Tokiyo, but not before she is able to smuggle the Imperial heir out of Otosan Uchi. The Hantei executes the Empress and assumes the throne, but none of the Clans are happy with their new Emperor. They honor his claim in the short term but plot against the Emperor in the shadows, confirming the Steel Chrysanthemum's paranoid delusions as truth.

In addition, the character who has earned the most Traditionalist Points during the game is rewarded with the position of either Imperial Chancellor or Imperial Advisor in the Steel Chrysanthemum's new court. The character with the most Imperialist Points, meanwhile, is dubbed a traitor, and they and their family are executed as traitors.

Traditionalist Points 10+ greater than Imperialist Points
Hantei XVI captures Otosan Uchi, but the Empress escapes the city with the Imperial heir. The Steel Chrysanthemum assumes the throne, but he is largely seen as a usurper by the Clans, who revolt against his rule and raise arms against their new Emperor. The Empire descends into warfare as the Clans fight among themselves and struggle to protect the exiled Empress and her son from the Emperor's paranoid searches.

In addition, the character who has earned the most Traditionalist Points during the game is rewarded with a prominent position in the Steel Chrysanthemum's new court, gaining two ranks of Status and four ranks of Infamy. The character who earned the most Imperialist Points, meanwhile, is banished from the Empire, and they and each member of their family gain three separate Sworn Enemy disadvantages.

Traditionalist Points and Imperialist Points are within 9 points of each other
The Steel Chrysanthemum reaches the Imperial Throne Room and kills Hantei Tokiyo, only to be cut down by the Empress' Guard. The Imperial heir survives the battle, and the Empire erupts in chaos as the Clans fight to control the Imperial heir and name themselves as regent of the young Emperor-to-be.

In addition, the characters who earned the most Traditionalist and Imperialist Points find themselves labeled as extremists and political pariahs in the chaos of the Empire; such characters gain the Social Disadvantage disadvantage (reducing their Status to 0), three ranks of Infamy, and lose all Social advantages they possess.

Imperialist Points 10+ greater than Traditionalist Points
The Steel Chrysanthemum reaches the Imperial Throne Room, slays the Imperial heir, and mortally wounds Hantei Tokiyo before she cuts him down. The Imperial healers do what they can to prolong Hantei Tokiyo's life, but it is clear that her time in the world is still limited. With no clear heir and a dying Empress, the Empire descends into chaos as the Clans attempt to convince Tokiyo to name one of their own as her designated heir.

In addition, the character who has earned the most Imperialist Points during the game is appointed as Hantei Tokiyo's personal attendant in the final months of her life, granting the character two ranks of Status and the Sacred Weapon (Ancestral Sword of the Hantei) advantage. The character who earned the most Traditionalist Points, meanwhile, is banished by the Empire, and they and each member of their family gain three separate Sworn Enemy disadvantages.

Imperialist Points 40+ greater than Traditionalist Points
The Steel Chrysanthemum reaches the Imperial Throne Room, seizes the Imperial heir, and attempts to use him to force Hantei Tokiyo to abdicate the throne. To his surprise, the Empress instead draws her sword and cuts him down. The Steel Chrysanthemum is killed by the attack, but so is the Imperial heir, leaving Hantei Tokiyo horrified at her actions and without a firm claim to the throne. The Clans initially seem to approve of her rule, but many of their courtiers work behind the scenes to undermine her power as the fallen Emperor's brothers attempt to claim the throne for their own.

In addition, the character who has earned the most Imperialist Points during the game is rewarded with the position of either Jade Champion or Shogun, a new position created specifically to honor the character. The character with the most Traditionalist Points, meanwhile, is dubbed a traitor, and they and their family are executed as traitors.

To his surprise, the Empress instead draws her sword, cuts him down, and rescues her son. With the heir safe and the Steel Chrysanthemum dead, the Clans fall into line as the Empress asserts her power over the Empire, becoming the firm ruler that she believes it needs.

In addition, the character who has earned the most Imperialist Points during the game is rewarded with their own Minor Clan. The character with the most Traditionalist Points, meanwhile, is arrested as a traitor; the character and their family are executed as traitors, and their Family is stripped of their name as punishment.

Separatists

Characters can also make Influence Rolls to gain Separatist Points, which represents the character supporting the Emperor's younger half-brother, Seppun Kato.

At the end of the game, each Separatist Point earned by the Empire will reduce the total of either the Imperialist or Traditionalist point total, whichever is higher, pushing Hantei Tokiyo and the Steel Chrysanthemum closer to mutual destruction... after which Seppun Kato can swoop in and claim the throne for himself.
