Some time later, there was movement near the pit again, as the ones who had escorted Tsukimi returned, with the tattooed woman.

Like before, the corpses and the bamboo grating was moved aside, and the almost unconscious prisoner was lowered down. Not very gently, but not so rough that she would fall and die. A couple of extra bruises wasn't something they were too worried about causing.

Judging by Tsukimi's looks, she'd been taking a severe beating. There were some burn marks near her clavicle, where her skin was already disfigured by the unseemly birthmark. Some nails were discolored with blood building up underneath them. Her lip was split with dried blood trickling down her chin, and her nose was swollen and bruised. Whatever they had done to her, they had made sure to make it painful, but not lethal.

Tani had been worried that something bad was going to happen. This had only... confirmed it. She moved to check on Tsukimi, quiet and careful. "Tsukimi-san..." her eyes closed. She took a breath. "I'm sorry. This is my fault."

I did not know Matsu could mew so pathetically, Kitamaru thought in a rare moment of reflecting on observation.

Looking up at the guards, he waved a hand as they were resetting the grate.

"I hope you care for this army, you are arriving closer to being an eternal part of it when it is returned to Toshigoku by the blades of those loyal to the heavens."

"Tani-sama," Tsukimi murmured, though with some relief that the others were still alive. "Don't be... you shouldn't bear the burden of the sin that others do."

This is why they are doomed to a realm of which there is no redemption.

One of the ashigaru snorts. "At least in Toshigoku, there was less waiting around," he grumbles under his breath.

Once the grate is back in place and the bodies are weighing it down, a different ashigaru crouches down near the edge. "Talk all you want, but I've killed tens of tens of samurai," she says. "More than there are stars in the sky. More than you have, shivering in your hole of mud and piss."

Tani looked up to the Ashigaru, glaring. But she held her tongue for now. There was nothing to be gained by sniping at ashigaru. And Tsukimi was in worse condition besides.

Tameaki, meanwhile, is sleeping as best he can, tucked away in his corner. The commotion of Tsukimi's return doesn't seem to disturb him.

"Men don't need to kill to prove their worth", Kitamaru answered flatly, disappointment in his voice. "You do know you have a chance to relearn that lesson, being here."

The ashigaru laughs. "What, this your first day in the Empire? All you samurai ever do is kill each other 'cause your kimono are different colors."

There's a shout from behind the woman. "Jo! Stop harassing the prisoners and get back to work!"

The woman rolls her eyes, makes a rude gesture at Kitamaru, and disappears.
