Post subject:  EVENT: Standard of Living (D11, Late Afternoon)

Scenario: Matsu Tani, daughter of the former Matsu daimyo, has been taken prisoner by the enemy general. Worse yet, Matsu Kassenko has strung the young warrior up on her battle standard, making her into a testament of what happens to those who stand against the wishes of the Steel Chrysanthemum...

With the governor in seclusion and no orders being given to the samurai under her command, it's Kitsu Izumi who steps forward and gathers samurai together to rescue the young samurai. "I own Matsu Tani a debt," she says, lowering her head in sorrow. "I will not allow her enemy to mock us with her survival."

Participants: 4 characters

Imperialist Victory: If Matsu Tani is rescued, the people of Nikesake rejoice at the victory! Even one of their own snatched from the jaws of death is cause for celebration. Each character that makes it back to Nikesake alive gains +.5 Glory.

Imperialist Bonus: If Kitsu Izumi safely returns to Nikesake, she overcomes part of her depression and takes a more active role in the city's defenses, preventing any antagonistic ancestral spirits from further bothering the samurai of Nikesake. Each character gains a single reroll that they can use over the course of this game (and this game alone).

Traditionalist Victory: If the rescue attempt fails, Matsu Tani remains a prisoner of Matsu Kassenko. Kitsu Izumi is similarly captured and delivered to the Steel Chrysanthemum, who - after a fair amount of torture - convinces her as to the legitimacy of his claim. The Empire gains +30 Traditionalist Points as she bolsters the ancestors of the Lion with her magic.

Traditionalist Bonus: If Tani is not cut down from Kassenko's battle standard, she remains there for the duration of the Steel Chrysanthemum's attempted coup. The Empire gains +30 Traditionalist Points

Rules: This is a multi-part event that will take characters a great deal of time to complete. As such, any participating characters will be unable to participate in any other threads taking place after this event until this event ends.

If you wish to join this suicide mission, post in this thread and prepare to rescue Tani in the Late Afternoon.

Tsukimi finished a prayer to Jizo as the group gathered, praying for Tani to still be alive.

She was as ready as she could be for such a dangerous mission.

Setsuna had to be there. They still had books to read with Tani.

Win win. Either Tani is a smart Matsu or does Matsu things with books!

Wasako could only do much by fighting raging ashigaru, it was time to put her skills to the test.

Kitsu Izumi gathers those chosen for the mission and compels them to link hands. She warns them to be ready for combat, then lowers her head and intones a powerful prayer to the water kami. The world seems to wobble and stretch around them, everyone's ears pop as if from a sudden change in pressure, and then suddenly, everyone is standing beyond the castle walls, surrounding Matsu Kassenko's war standard... and in the middle of the enemy army.

Izumi collapses to the ground, overwhelmed by the near-impossible feat. "H-Hurry," she implores, coughing up blood as she clutches her side.

Rules: Each character must attempt a TN 20 Willpower Trait Roll to avoid being overcome with vertigo. On a success, the character can act normally. On a failure, the character suffers a +5 TN penalty to every roll they make in this event from the disorientation of being teleported.

Tameaki draws on his inner reserves and shakes off the disorientation (22, 1 Void spent) of the sudden transposition. He pulls his jitte from its normal spot, tucked in his obi, and readies himself for battle...

"I'm always ready," Setsuna boasted. That was the way to win the heart, right? They'd have to write a poem later for Izumi too, maybe learn how to play an instrument of all things! Oh such exciting things to -

Funky time. This wasn't the right at all. There was a sickening feeling in their stomach, ready to vomit straight into the mask. Oh that would be terrible indeed.

So Setsuna kept it in. They offer a hand to touch the creepily sexy Kitsu once more. And, well, to actually help. "We need to keep moving."

She knew time was of the essence when Izumi told them to hurry.

The samurai only have a few moments to rescue Tani before the enemy army realizes that they are there. One character can attempt a TN 20 Athletics (Climbing)/Strength to climb the standard and cut down Tani. Unless the character calls two Raises on this roll to hold Tani as she's cut down, she falls to the ground and suffers 2k2 damage.

Regardless of success or failure, each other character still on the ground must make a TN 20 [Weapon Skill] (Emphasis)/Agility Skill Roll to cut down the soldiers around them. (This counts as triggering the Soft-Hearted disadvantage.)

"I am Bayushi Setsuna! Soon all of your secret techniques of swordsmanship shall be mine! But for now, hyah!" The bushi started cutting into the troops with a lot of flair. Truly, perhaps too much flair. At least they were doing their job.

Wasako stilled her nerves as they found themselves in the heart of the enemy's legion. She knew very little when it came to these returned souls but she imagined that they must feed on emotion and rage. If it was chaos without, then she must remain serenity within if she was going to make it through this. She drew her sword with one hand and held up her other hand with two fingers up in concentration. Stepping forward, she started fighting back the enemy troops to buy them some time.

Well, this is what happens when a courtier decides to start swinging a weapon. (Void for a fake Kenjutsu roll for wakizashi attacks vs. TN 20 - 15.)

Tameaki is beginning to look a little tired - too much pampered courtly life and not enough practice. He'd have to see to that when he got back...

...he looked around at the gathered spirit-soldiers closing in on him...

...if he got back.

As the others drew their weapons, Tsukimi silently let the power of water flow through her limbs and the lion on her arm flickered as if it was pouncing an unseen prey.

She scaled the terrible banner swiftly, and used her wakizashi to cut the ropes that kept the Lioness suspended. "I'm here, Tani-sama," she whispered to the barely conscious woman, and quickly grabbed hold of her friend to prevent her from taking a nasty fall.

They had the prisoner they had come for. Now they needed to get out of here. Fast.

By the time Tsukimi has descended from the banner with Tani in her arms, the nearest enemy samurai have been alerted to their presence. Shouting warriors surge forward from every direction, pushing past Tameaki's weak defenses and into the circle of steel.

The spirit manages to stab Izumi in the side side before Setsuna spins around and beheads the roaring samurai, but it's already too late. Overwhelmed by the backlash for her spell and losing blood, she collapses to the ground, conscious but bleeding out.

Matsu Tani isn't much better; she's barely conscious, and the wounds she suffered in battle the day before have been left uncleaned.

The only way to escape certain death is wage a fighting retreat through the enemy army before they realize what is happening.

Rules: Each character must succeed at three TN 20 Defense/Reflexes Skill Rolls. If a character is carrying another person (be it Matsu Tani, Kitsu Izumi, or one of their fallen brethren), they must call two Raises on this Skill Roll to do so.

On a success, the character suffers 3k1 damage and makes it one third of the way to the castle. On a failure, the character suffers 3k1 damage and makes no progress.

It is recommended that characters make progress together, so that if one of them falls or drops a carried companion, the others can pick them up (which can be done between each set of rolls).

Characters that have advanced to a new third cannot "go back" to retrieve the wounded from a previous third; this is a one-way trip.

"Izumi!" And it was like that that Setsuna understood, at least slightly, how Touki felt. They sheathed their weapons and tried pick up this Creepily sexy Kitsu. Oh but they couldn't be too handsy, that would be improper...

"Excuse me, just need to... Um." Setsuna stared at the daimyo until they were shredded enough.

"Ah, curse you Touki's ancestor! Get away from us!"

Damnit. Maybe they should've brought a backup shugenja to heal their getaway ride in case of an emergency like this.

Tsukimi pushed the thought away for now - there was no reason to dwell on it at this point in time.

"Let's leg it, minna," the Togashi said to the others, hoisting Tani over her back for a piggy-back ride. "Unless you can do something with Kitsu-sama."

She began to move, but it was difficult carrying the dead-weight of Tani. There were some deep and unpleasant cuts. Ow.

Already she felt drained from her stunts earlier. But she didn't want to give up yet.

(OOC Note: There's no way Tameaki's going to be able to carry anyone as he's untrained in...well, everything he'd need to have here and is now Void-less, so I'll just go as far as I can in this post and hope that someone lives long enough to get me if I fall.)

Somehow, Tameaki manages to push past the advancing spirits, only slightly injured by flashing blades as he dashes toward the castle and safety. (Defense 21, 9 damage - Healthy 11/15)

"I can help them once we get back," he shouts to the others, "but it's too dangerous to try anything here!"

As he'll be lucky to get out of this intact, he continues onward rather than stopping to help anyone, hoping that the others will be just behind him. Another blade scrapes across his ribs, earning a grimace of pain, but he's two-thirds of the way there... (Defense 20, 9 damage again - Nicked 5/6)

"Almost there!" he cries out...but not close enough! His wounds have slowed him down just enough for him to get tripped up, falling just meters from the safety of the walls. An arrow strikes him in the back as he falls - he's still alive, but it would take a miracle to get him on his feet and back behind friendly lines. (Defense 21 - two short due to his +3 wound modifier. 7 damage, 5/6 Grazed)

It was indeed time to leave with the important Lions, if they could make it. Wasako did her best to not lose focus on the situation. She gave nods to her companion and began the arduous journey back to the castle. She could only get so far until she heard the sharp whistling of arrows that took to the skies and made its trajectory right for her. Raising her sword, she swung and broke one in mid-flight before it could graze her. A splinter did break off and was caught by her cheek. She hissed in pain as she pulled it out and look to where her companions stood.
