Erina rubs her eyes, exhausted from the day. She had been working with horses earlier in the day, but without riders, they were useless. Any samurai inclined to ride already had access to a better horse.

Which was why she had contacted the other two.

Mogami had shown herself to be an able person to organize lessons while preparing for the defense of the city, and the Moto had expansive practice with exactly the skills they would need.

Baatar looked over the scruffy lot of peasants that Erina had been able to assemble on short notice. "Do any of you know how to ride?" he asked, only to get disappointing answers. Few Lion samurai had experience with riding horses, much less peasantry. One of them had ridden a water buffalo, once.

"Umm, let's start with the basics.... identifying tracks," Baatar suggested, seeing as riders and horses both seemed in short supply. The young Unicorn pointed out the difference between human tracks and hoof prints, and the difference between the tracks of a man in armor versus a man in sandals. This concept seemed easier for the peasants to understand, and before long, Baatar set them to follow some of the tracks left in the snow by the refugees fleeing to Nikesake. Unfortunately, two of the slower-witted peasants somehow managed to start following each others' tracks around a tree.

"This ... is going to take awhile," Baatar admitted to Erina with a sigh.

"That's the general idea. How quickly do we learn new skills, and that's with a lifetime of preparation." Erina nods. "And it will be a trial by fire when we get out into the field. If we get a few to survive first contact, we will have done a good job. Everything until then is about helping the odds of getting there."
