Hachi makes his way to the Shrines, hoping the Spirits hadn't damaged it too much.

He stops and the door, and steels his will before entering.

Seeking to be of some use the Hilsilage quietly wends his way toward the Shrine.

"Good morning, samurai-sama."

"Ah, good morning, ah, Naga-sama. Have you had, ah, your appetite satiated this morning?"

"Indeed. Our hosts are most gracious to attend to our needs. I wish I could have been of more assistance against their foes."

The Hilsilage examines the door of the shrine, wishing he could find the secret of keeping things whole.

Hachi looks through, and shakes his head. "This will need a lot of work to sanctify again." He sighs, at the state of it, then looks around for a smaller room. As he had thought, while the army had seemed to destroy much, not too many were likely to destroy brooms. So, he took one.

Then, looking at the Naga, he took a second one. Walking over, he extended it in silent invitation.

"It is an excellent place to start."

The Hilsilage takes the proffered broom with a bow.

"I fondly remember the monk who was always helping with this task."

Hachi sighed at that reminder of what likely happened to that person.

"Hai. Well, we're not likely to get too much done, but we can at least get a bit started, and make it easier for the next person."

The Hilsilage begins with the threshold, clearing away muddy boot prints dried in the days since the rains had cleared.

"It must be strange, not knowing who might take up after you when you are gone."

"Um, I suppose? What do you mean?"

"I have been contemplating human life."

The naga makes one last pass over the threshold, the straw digging into each cranny of the stone.

"The part that is most different from ours is that you do not know that you will return when your task is again needed. You have to hand it off to a different soul. One that you cannot trust will act with the same virtue, or from the same motivations."

"Well, that's true, yes. It is why parenting is so highly regarded. You have to train your children to do the work, and if you do well, they will continue where you left off. Sometimes, of course, there are no children. Which will leave you having to find someone to follow after you. And there are occasions, such as is currently happening, where people decide they can do a better job than the child, and try to take it over. Whether they should or not."

"This overflow, this leaving your celestial place, it is like a flood."

The Hilsilage wipes the dust the broom is too coarse to remove away with his tail.

"Each movement displaces the next, seeding disharmony in a great cresting boom before it is set to right."

"That is one way to see it, yes. Or another would be that history is like a river, and the spirits have broken out of their place, and created a dam upon the water, causing turbulence and problems."

"And eventually the waters will rise to destroy it, and there will be much lost and in the end the river will go where the water flows. I suppose it is as pointless to rail against it as it is to disrupt the flow in the first place."

There is no more avoiding it. The Hilsilage opens the door.
